RENEW TO SUSTAIN Sustainability is integrated into every layer of Kärcher’s operation, as the company explains here.
Established in 1935, in Winnenden, Germany, Kärcher is celebrating its 90th anniversary this year. As a group, Kärcher has grown significantly, achieving a record turnover of €3.4bn in 2024. A major contributor is its UK business, the fourth largest entity in the group, which began operations in 1978 in Banbury, Oxfordshire, where its headquarters remain.
As a pioneer in cleaning technology, Kärcher developed Europe’s first hot water high-pressure cleaner in 1950, propelling Kärcher’s global expansion. Today, Kärcher consists of 17,000 employees across 170 companies, with over 50,000 service centres in more than 85 countries. Despite growth, Kärcher remains family owned and maintains its values of integrity and responsibility.
Kärcher UK’s HQ spans over three floors and includes a training academy, distribution centre, offices, warehouse, and a workshop with a team of 12 dedicated engineers focused on repairing and modifying larger machines. Various sustainability measures have been implemented at the HQ to reduce emissions and improve energy efficiency. The company is building a robust environmental strategy, driven by a passionate UK team, dedicated to the long-term development.
Sustainable operations Sustainability is integrated into every layer of Kärcher’s operation, with the company championing the idea of ‘renew to sustain’. Using water-powered cleaning, Kärcher restores the environment while minimising equipment stress, reducing product waste. Kärcher aims to further reduce their environmental output, working towards net zero emissions across all levels of its UK operations and reducing waste through repairing and reselling returned product.
Kärcher’s sustainable commitment extends to community initiatives within the UK, such as collecting and transforming plastic from beaches into workstations, shelving or display cases, supporting a school for autistic children, and partnering with the non-profit Dogs for Good.
Kärcher’s equipment is used not only to support communities on a small scale, but also a global scale. From restoring Christ the Redeemer in Rio, cleaning Nelson’s Column

and the London Eye, and being the official cleaner for the 2012 Olympics in London, Kärcher’s reliable and efficient equipment easily maintains sites that bring immense value to people all over the world.
Fostering innovation Kärcher’s diverse and specialised portfolio of products meets the ever-evolving needs of both businesses and consumers around the world. Its flagship pressure washer remains the leading product in the UK; however, the company has expanded its offering to include floor scrubbers, large-scale street sweepers, and the popular Window Vac, which has sold 3.5 million units in the past five years. This success has supported further investment in their online shop and product portfolio.
Kärcher utilises its six service centres and head office to sell products directly to businesses and consumers. Continued investment in this area has led to a recent hub being established in Manchester and a focus on a site in St Albans. These sites improve access for businesses and consumers, as well as strengthening Kärcher’s presence in London and the North.
Ensuring growth To support operations, Kärcher works closely with trusted suppliers and partners. Collaborations with organisations such as waste management experts Flame UK and building optimisation partner LCMB, allows Kärcher to reduce emissions and improve air quality, while navigating market changes reliably.
Continuing expansion, Kärcher plans to invest in more service centres across the country, as well as developing their automation and robotics portfolio, boosting the efficiency and safety capabilities of their equipment. The company’s sustained growth and culture is underpinned by its fantastic team, some of whom have been at the company for 35 years. Creating opportunities that drive forward the business and employees, while ensuring Kärcher makes a positive impact towards a clean and sustainable world remains a priority.
