WHEN
FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION
Since 1956, PPSPower has been a trusted supplier of back-up power solutions.
Here, it explains what makes a successful power supply company.
Based at headquarters in Sherburn-in-Elmet, PPSPower provides a full ‘turnkey’ service for stand-by power systems including decommissioning and removal of existing equipment, any associated mechanical and electrical works, installation of digital control systems and full generator commissioning and testing.
PPSPower helps its customers maintain their generator and UPS systems, extending the life of their assets through regular maintenance schedules. Its team of skilled service and maintenance engineers work closely with customers to understand their needs, improve energy efficiency and keep their critical systems running with bespoke maintenance, repair and replacement service packages.
Working carefully with customers in a variety of critical sectors, PPSPower develops cost-effective solutions that maximise the reliability of their back-up power systems.
Previously trading as Powerplant Services and the Progress Group, in 2014 the two companies came together to form PPSPower. The company now operates a full nationwide service, with dedicated generator and UPS departments and a team of nationally deployed engineers based across England and Wales, with a dedicated depot in Scotland.
The company benefits from being part of a wider group of power solutions companies; its sister company YorPower

Absolute reliability - The Sharp Project The firm was shortlisted as a finalist at the prestigious DCS Awards 2019, for its work at Manchester City Council’s unique office building, The Sharp Project. Its work to provide absolute reliability at The Sharp Project was recognised and shortlisted in the Data Centre Consolidation/Upgrade/Refresh Project of the Year at the 2019 DCS Awards, which are supported by the Data Centre Alliance.
The works required PPS Power’s engineers to decommission and disconnect one of the council’s back-up power units and relocate it to a newly constructed room in the building alongside two new 120kVA units. Each UPS system has its own string of batteries. The units were installed, and load bank tested at 100%, with each unit switched off one by one, to ensure that the N+2 configuration works as it should, before putting the client’s equipment online.
The solution will retain N+2 in the event of a unit failure, and during service visits. The new UPS are highly efficient units which provide the council with increased power quality, efficiency and a reduced power consumption. Most importantly, Manchester City Council’s operations team now has peace of mind in knowing that its power supply is protected and has complete resilience from potential outages.
Mike Farrington, Technical Operations Manager at Manchester City Council, said: “We have been very impressed with the PPSPower team’s professionalism and commitment to this project. They were careful to communicate all aspects of the work to us, which helped reduce the impact on our work. They have provided a solution that gives our team peace of mind in knowing that our power supply is protected.”
