WINTER MAINTENANCE GET USED TO GRIT!
As frost begins to bite, estates professionals begin to look for a road surface safety solution that’s simple, affordable and adaptable. Steve Sinnott, Sales Manager at Econ Engineering, explains why gritter sprayers are one such solution.
Our climate is changing – and with winter on its way, facilities and estates managers must adapt to protect their properties against sudden cold snaps.
With unpredictable weather leaving us less time to prepare and budgets tight as a result of the cost-of-living crisis, estates professionals are looking for a road surface safety solution that’s simple, affordable and adaptable.
Trailer sprayers can be hooked on to existing vehicles in the fleet and employ a fast-acting liquid solution to prevent freezing. Here we explore the benefits of these mobile solutions in more detail.
A compact design to get more done A key benefit of the trailer sprayer for estates is its compact nature – it can be used with any vehicle, capable of towing 3.5 tonnes. In the past, trailers have had relatively small tanks, whereas many trailer sprayers incorporate a much larger capacity, increasing the area you can cover.
In addition, in-cab control means the driver can operate the trailer without stopping, saving time and making adjustments from the comfort of their vehicle.
Because the sprayer’s pump is driven via a hydraulic system from the trailer axle, there is no requirement for an external engine, reducing costs as there are no additional components to service.
Use your everyday vehicle all year round Crucially, the trailer system offers increased versatility compared to a dedicated vehicle. With a trailer sprayer, the tow vehicle can be used for duties such as landscape gardening and transporting materials during the day.
When not needed for daily work, the trailer sprayer attachment can be hooked on to deal with a cold night ahead. This is quick and easy, as no adaptation is needed in order for the vehicle to tow the trailer.
Many estate managers need a system that allows them to cover a large property such as a farm or industrial estate, without wasting time coming back to refill. A trailer sprayer’s increased capacity is more than double that of most other compact trailers, facilitating this with minimal inconvenience.
Having an attachment that can be used with existing vehicles means there is no need to wait for an external provider to send one out to you at short notice, and no need to purchase and service an extra vehicle.
Prepare for the unexpected with
fast-acting liquid spray Through ongoing conversations with key customers in the market, trailer sprayers have been developed and adapted further.
One key element of this is the use of liquid brine spray, rather than the traditional rock salt, as a de-icer on roads. Mindsets are shifting across estates management, as the benefits of liquid as opposed to salt become more well known. A liquid sprayer has the ability to treat roads and start the de-icing process immediately, whereas rock salt is more slowly absorbed.
Salt must be spread three to four hours before the ground freezes. With liquid brine, you are empowered to act more quickly and deal with changeable weather conditions as little as 30 minutes before freezing point.
The future of gritter sprayers Plans for a drop-in unit to fit inside existing vehicles could change the game by allowing more people to operate sprayers at work.
Not everyone is able to tow larger items – many younger people have to take a separate test to drive vehicles towing up to 3.5 tonnes. This means much of the workforce cannot tow many sprayers currently on the market. The addition of a drop-in unit could overcome this limitation and allow many more drivers to use these sprayers and get ahead of the increasing challenges of winter.
In essence, for gritter sprayers the world is our oyster, with unlimited options for innovations and custom- built bespoke solutions to meet a wide range of facility management requirements.
