HVAC / AIR QUALITY

to more energy-efficient, low NOx condensing boilers or water heaters, potentially in a flexible packaged solution, could be a practical option.

Take the opportunity to address the system’s distribution pipework and heat emitters to allow the system to operate more efficiently at a maximum flow temperature of 55°C or lower, in line with Building Regulations. This will also prepare the heating system for the successful integration of heat pumps which operate most efficiently at low temperature outputs.

Heat pump considerations When the time is right and the heat pump design philosophy is locked in, a number of factors should be addressed.

Is there sufficient external space for the heat pumps that will allow for flexible specification and configuration? Is the existing electrical load capacity adequate or will more need to be brought in? Can other renewable technologies such as solar panels, be added to run your heat pumps?

Hybrid solutions If the building currently depends on gas boilers, it is unlikely that moving to an all-electric solution will be achievable overnight. In such cases, hybrid systems that integrate heat pumps with gas boilers should not be overlooked as an important stage in the decarbonisation process. A hybrid heat pump system can provide an effective means of overcoming retrofit challenges and decarbonise a significant part of the energy use.

Manufacturer support With no silver bullet solution available, there is no denying that decarbonising heat can be a huge challenge. For this reason, it is advisable to ask your chosen manufacturer for a free site visit to assess the unique challenges and opportunities relating to your building stock. With all the necessary combination of products and techniques as well as in-depth expertise and knowledge, they are well placed to support you in plotting an achievable pathway to net zero that prioritises optimal outcomes at every stage.
