EDGING

TOWARDS THE FUTURE

With more and more organisations tapping

into the power of edge computing, Leo Craig of Riello UPS explains why the flexibility of micro data centres make them a facilities manager’s best friend.

According to tech firm Forescout, 69% of organisations in the UK have more than 1,000 internet-connected devices on their networks. For nearly a fifth (19%), it’s actually 10,000-plus devices.

The incredible rise of the ‘Internet of Things’ is already making a massive impact in the world of facilities management. Smart buildings full of sensors and connected equipment delivering huge improvements in energy efficiency, productivity, and maintenance.

And as we head into the era of superfast 5G, these opportunities will increase immeasurably. It’s predicted that we’ll each interact with a smart or connected device 4,800 times a day in our professional and personal lives within the next five years – that’s once every 18 seconds.

Our interconnected world depends more and more on real-time data processing, which poses a huge challenge to the data centres and cloud computing that we’ve come to rely on.

Sending data from sensors located in offices or factories all the way to a data centre hundreds – or thousands – of miles away, processing it, then transporting back isn’t a satisfactory solution.

Not only does it take up huge amounts of expensive bandwidth, but it’s slow. In a world where automation and AI assume more and more daily tasks, even millisecond delays cause processing bottlenecks that strangle vital decision-making.

That’s why edge computing offers a logical solution. Edge brings the processing close to where the data is
