Both the interior and surrounding area promote a sense of balance between the new and the traditional - with modern elements that suggest creativity and innovation, combined with classic styles that render characteristics of relaxation and harmony. The virtues of a distant culture are brought to life in such a way they become a practical reality for the international set of employees who cohabit this space.
Uninhabited Antarctica is an example where design has taken stylistic, rather than cultural inspiration. A land of cold and unfamiliar beauty, the building stands alone at the edge of the campus. Steel and soft palettes of grey and beige are accentuated with lively pinks that provide a bright postmodern finish. It captures aspects of Antarctica's position as a frontier, a place of newness and adventure, including a 360° panoramic break area where one can relax with a view of Athens, the ENA campus, and an ice cream from the building's Emperor’s Choice dessert cafeteria.
Furniture throughout the campus is often custom built. Africa’s Afrobaba Cafè includes hand-painted murals, crafts, textiles and local games, all carefully selected and uniquely sourced from African craftsmen. Inspired by African architecture, its layout features seven diversified seating areas arrayed around a central service station, resembling the typical structure of an African village. The Junction Table was designed specifically for the operational needs of Asia building’s Barbarian employees, inspired by the pictographic maps of the now typical ultra-modern Asian metro station. Each section connects seamlessly to the next, adaptable to any space and without visible cables. The Team Desks which service the leading American social media company in the America building draw from the colours of its branding, while taking its stylistic inspiration from the concept of the Emoji. It’s an open work station that promotes direct collaboration in the style of its continent.
ENA is a modern working campus for a modern workforce. It is a sign of how our spaces can grow and adapt to reflect our growingly multi-cultural heritage. ENA offers a kind of refuge to international workers living in an unfamiliar country, a space which celebrates diversity and which makes bold steps to include it at the level of architecture and design, from materials to interior.
But such an approach goes further than offering familiarity. It shines for just the opposite reasons, offering employees a chance to celebrate and partake in a global community. From the continental dining spaces and approaches to design and working, ENA means a chance to experience new ways of coworking, to share cuisines from an unfamiliar continent, and to relax and socialise in the new style of Planet Earth.
