FEATURE 10 QUESTIONS WITH..

In each issue we ask an FM professional the Tomorrow’s FM 10 Questions. This month we spoke to Samantha Willson, Business Development Manager at BICSc.

Q1

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB?

My first job was at a local show shop whilst I was completing my GCSEs, I absolutely loved it, earning my own money and having freedom, although I spent most of my wages on shoes!

Q2 Q3 Q4

HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE FACILITIES

MANAGEMENT INDUSTRY?

I started with BICSc nearly 13 years ago now, at the time I had two primary school aged children, so it was great when I saw the position with hours that were perfect came up. When I read about BICSc I thought it was something different to what I had previously ever done and was interested in where this could take me.

HOW DO YOU CHALLENGE THE

STATUS QUO?

I like to think at BICSc we offer different solutions to different environments, we listen to the customers requirements and recommend bespoke training and solutions to their training requirements that suit them for the long run. This in turn can reduce staff turnover and offer progression with organisations.

SINCE YOU STARTED IN FM WHAT HAS

BEEN THE BIGGEST CHANGE THE INDUSTRY HAS SEEN/

YOU HAVE OBSERVED? I think eco-friendly cleaning products have made a big change within the industry and people are more aware of what they are using and the ingredients and effects it has on us and the environment.

Q5

WHO, IN ANY OTHER INDUSTRY,

DO YOU MOST ADMIRE? Keanu Reeves, not only did he lose

his daughter at birth, his wife then passed away. Struggling with dyslexia he has still become one of the greatest actors. He supports several charities and causes. In response to his sister's battle with leukaemia he founded a private cancer foundation, which aids children's hospitals and provides cancer research. Right from philanthropy to his heart-to-heart interactions with people on the road or on the ride on the tube exemplify his commitment to making the world a better place. Plus I heard he loves cats!

Q6 Q7

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE FILM??

My favourite film ever is Dirty Dancing! I just love the music and dancing. Once my cousin and I watched it every day for the whole eight weeks summer holiday just to learn all the moves!

IF YOU COULD HOST A DINNER PARTY

WITH THREE GUESTS, DEAD OR ALIVE, WHO WOULD

THEY BE AND WHY? Keanu Reeves for obvious reasons, Micky Flanagan as I think he is one of the funniest people ever and he would bring so much fun to the table and Whitney Houston, being one of the greatest singers of all time I would love the chance to hear her sing live.

Q8 Q9

ANY ADVICE TO SOMEONE

JUST STARTING OUT IN

THE INDUSTRY? Get to know the industry as there is so much to take in, listen to others within the industry as others experiences and knowledge is valuable.

WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE FUTURE

OF THE FM INDUSTRY? The integration of cobotics into the in

the industry will continue to make a huge impact and we need to embrace the changes and challenges that come with it.

10WHICH AREA OF FM

BE BEST TRANSFORMED THROUGH TECHNOLOGY?

DO YOU THINK COULD

I think the FM area that could be best transformed through technology is smart and automated maintenance and cleaning. This can be through robotics- these can perform routine tasks efficiently and consistently, allowing the cleaning operatives to focus on any specific complex tasks. Smart management systems - platforms that can manage and monitor cleaning activities and schedule tasks to be completed. This can also track staff performance and ensure compliance and cleaning standards are met. Mobile apps that can track and give real time updates, tasks and schedules which improves communication and coordination. Training can also be provided via an online platform ensuring proper techniques and safety are kept to the highest standard.
