A PRESCRIPTION FOR IMMERSIVE TEACHING
London Metropolitan University reflects on how its new virtual reality facilities mark a significant step forward in preparing future generations of nurses and allied healthcare professionals.
The education sector is undergoing an extensive transformation due to a range of new developments and technology. Because of these advancements, the way that we train and upskill students is changing. This is especially true for those in the healthcare sector, as future medical professionals require a robust foundation in both theoretical knowledge and practical skills.
Since the unveiling of its groundbreaking virtual reality (VR) facilities at the start of this year, London Metropolitan University is at the forefront of pioneering education. Funded by a £5.8m grant from the Office for Students, it marks a significant step forward in preparing future generations of nurses and allied healthcare professionals, integrating immersive virtual reality technology, to create a truly transformative learning experience.
The virtual learning environment Moving beyond textbook scenarios, the VR teaching
facilities allow students to fully immerse themselves in 360° simulations. This environment enables students to develop a deeper understanding of complex medical scenarios, encountering realistic, high-pressure situations, such as car accidents and critical care emergencies. The immersive technology allows for controlled and safe practice, supporting students to hone their decision-making skills and refine their clinical techniques in a simulated setting. This risk- free environment provides a valuable platform for experimentation and learning from mistakes, contributing to increased confidence and competence when faced with real-world challenges.
The London university is also home to a comprehensive learning environment, incorporating a fully equipped ward, ICU, simulation, and homecare suite, offering students a realistic hospital space to practice their skills in a variety of clinical settings. In addition, the inclusion of
