10 QUESTIONS WITH...

In each issue we ask an FM professional the Tomorrow’s FM 10 Questions. This month we spoke to Graham Mann, Head of Water Services at Open Water Market.

Q1

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB?

My very first job was with the Royal Navy. I was a part of a branch within the Underwater Warfare called the Anti- submarine Warfare.

Q2 Q3 Q4

HOW DID YOU GET

INTO THE FACILITIES

MANAGEMENT INDUSTRY? My introduction to the world of FM was when we started having conversations with companies that needed help with carrying out water leak repairs and other water services that they didn’t have the manpower or resources to deal with it.

WHO, IN ANY OTHER INDUSTRY, DO YOU MOST ADMIRE?

One person that truly had a long-lasting impression on me - above and beyond my professional experience and connection with other industries - was actually my school teacher. He was a genuinely patient man that always took the time to work with individuals to get the best out of them.

HOW DO YOU CHALLENGE THE STATUS QUO IN FM?

Although it sounds cliched, to truly challenge you have to think outside the box. For the FM companies, we are seeing them start to be more proactive for their customer and adding more value to their contracts which is great to see. But, as with any industry, there’s always more work to be done on this.

Outsourcing to those with in-depth industry knowledge can make an FM’s job easier and help them to develop an intrinsic understanding of where they can improve the status quo for the future.

Q5

HOW WOULD YOU IMPROVE THE FACILITIES MANAGEMENT

INDUSTRY?

Developing further capability to deal with waste water more effectively and being more environmentally aware. Although some inspiring innovation is definitely happening with the FM industry, in comparison to other industries it still has a way to go.

10 QUESTIONS WITH…. Q6

Q7 Q8 IT BE AND WHY?

I’ve always been someone who likes things done a certain way, with that being said, I would have to go with mind control. I would be able to influence having things done the way I wanted, even if only for a day.

IF YOU COULD HOST A DINNER PARTY WITH ANY THREE GUESTS,

DEAD OR ALIVE, WHO WOULD THEY BE

AND WHY? Winston Churchill, Bruce McLaren and Mike Flewitt the current CEO of McLaren.

These guys are so different but fascinating in their own way, along with being great leaders and innovators.

Q9

WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE FUTURE OF THE FACILITIES

MANAGEMENT INDUSTRY?

I think the FM Industry has a fantastic opportunity to be influential in the future. There are lots of possibilities to use current and future innovation to lead the way in technology, sustainability and environmental issues, such as water and energy efficiency. It will be interesting to see how emerging players on the scene will shake things up with their new-to- market innovations. If more players take up the innovation baton in this space, competition will rise, meaning the customer will have more choice and a better experience.

Q10

SEAN FISHER, COO AT ATALIAN SERVEST ASKS: WHAT COULD BE

DONE TO ATTRACT MORE PEOPLE TO THE

FACILITIES MANAGEMENT INDUSTRY? To attract more people in the FM industry, it could add more valued services and form strategic partnerships that leverage the potential of tech-powered solutions to become more environmentally sustainable with utilities. The industry could also look to position itself as being leaders in demonstrating a diverse approach to the market.
