THE INTEGRATED APPROACH TO RETAIL SECURITY


Ric Martin, CEO of newly formed Pinnacle Systems, highlights how, with some careful planning and integration capability, it is possible to set up a strong facilities management security plan and stay one step ahead of offenders, dramatically reducing the security risks to property, teams, customers and assets across the retail sector.


As retail crime continues to evolve, retailers’ prevention efforts must rise to the challenge. FMs are increasingly being called to consider security as part of their role across a single unit or several sites.


FMs in retail have a broader role than ever before, taking in everything from traditional services such as heating, electrics and the physical build of a store, to cleaning, IT and communications. And increasingly today, it involves partnering with security and loss prevention officers.


Why is it even more important now? Theft and loss pose several multidimensional threats for retailers, including increasing and costlier losses, the inability to easily pass on sufficient data and evidence, and the erosion of customer trust and loyalty, which can have lasting impacts on brand reputation and overall business success.

how shoplifting has become an epidemic. Iceland executive chairman Richard Walker said his company is spending ‘more than ever’ on security.


John Lewis is among 10 of the UK’s biggest retailers which have agreed to fund a police operation to crack down on shoplifting, dubb ed Project Pegasus.


The companies are expected to pay around £600,000 towards the project, utilising CCTV pictures and facial recognition technology to better understand shoplifting operations.


Retailers can rely on remote security professionals who utilise security cameras, speakers, and microphones installed at the stores to offer discreet, always-on surveillance without putting store associates at risk.


These services allow trained security professionals to identify threats such as argumentative customers, loiterers at the store’s perimeter, or those intent on committing theft.
