10 QUESTIONS

10 Questions with... Norman Niven

Each issue we ask an industry professional the Tomorrow’s Care 10 Questions. This month, we chatted to Norman Niven, Chief Executive from telmenow.com.

Q2 Q3

WHO, IN ANY OTHER INDUSTRY, DO YOU MOST ADMIRE?

James Dyson

HOW WOULD YOU IMPROVE THE CARE SECTOR?

Develop products and services that are well designed and well built that have a real benefit to people – and then ask them to pay for the products.

Direct to consumer is the only way that care can be afforded in the future, with people who are unable to afford to pay being supported through bursaries set up with the proceeds of consumers.

Q4 Q1

HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE CARE INDUSTRY?

I am a qualified pharmacist and established my pharmacy in Stockport, Cheshire, in 1986. I developed a very close working relationship with care homes that I provided medicines and training to.

However, most significantly, developing a medication administration system that improved the efficiency of medication administration and management in 1991. The system, Nomad, is now used by care homes and community care units such as sheltered housing and individuals at home. I developed a second medication management system in 2008, Biodose, which accommodates medicinal liquids as well tablets and capsules.

I have vested hundreds of care homes, sheltered housing units and many local authorities and social service departments in the 30 years since opening my pharmacy.

WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU COULD GIVE TO SOMEONE NEW

COMING INTO THE CARE PROFESSION? Spend as much time as possible doing market research before you launch a product or service - it is better than finding a competitor(s) aſter launch.

Q8 Q9

TOMORROW’S CARE? A comparison of care services across Europe.

THIS YEAR HAS BEEN AN EVENTFUL ONE SO FAR; WITH

THIS IN MIND WHAT DO YOU THINK THE FUTURE HOLDS FOR THE CARE INDUSTRY? More people will live longer and so will have longer to live with infirmity. Care will become more important, but will have to change its structure and funding methods.
