Professor Lynda Holt, CEO of Health Service 360 and co host of the #EndPJparalysis Campaign, talks about the role of social currency in keeping people moving.
We all know exercise is good for us, we probably like the buzz we get aſter we’ve done it but we are not all as motivated to actually get started. However, when you can be part of the latest fitness trend, whatever that is, you have more motivation, you are more connected to the process, and you are significantly more likely to take action. This is because trends, fads even, have social currency – your decision to act is influenced by the trend.
Getting people involved in movement, exercise and other things that prevent physical or psychological deconditioning, becomes both easier and more fun when it has social currency, and I’m not just talking about those doing the moving here. It takes more time, more effort and more commitment to help someone walk to the loo than it does to pop them in a chair and wheel them there, doesn’t it.
There is of course a longer-term gain in preventing deconditioning, maintaining confidence and mobility – but in the moment it’s harder.

We know that evidence or that facts alone are not enough to make us change our habits – if it were, no one would smoke, eat junk food, overindulge on alcohol, I’m sure you can think of a few more things to add to this list.
