substantial reduction in the amount of time that care home staff need to spend internally on laundry.

COUNTING THE

COST OF TIME Perhaps one of the biggest aspects of laundering linen that is oſten underestimated is the sheer amount of time, planning and physical demand that it places on care home staff – whether it’s employees that have responsibility solely for laundry or carers that must also take care of laundry provision. The Berendsen survey identified that the amount of time spent by staff on laundry was a particular concern and 46% of homes identified saving staff time as the biggest potential benefit of outsourcing their laundry services.

KEEPING TRACK When questioned about laundry

problems, half of surveyed care homes identified losing items as causing significant trouble to their staff and residents. To minimise losses, care homes or families usually tag residents’ clothing, which usually involves the time-consuming task of attaching a name label to each and every item.

When outsourcing, this task should be covered by the service provider. For

example, Berendsen uses the latest labelling and scanning systems to ensure that every garment is traceable, right through the laundering process all the way back to its individual owner. This ensures that no items are lost, preventing unnecessary stress and upset to be experienced by residents or staff.

CREATING CHOICE FOR

LAUNDRY MANAGEMENT The availability of outsourced services introduces a choice for care home managers – the consequences of which will be felt day-to-day within the care home. With the right provider in place, outsourcing laundry can bring many benefits and can help to overcome some of the biggest challenges of operating in-house laundries. Ultimately, today’s service providers offer convenience to care homes, by taking care of all aspects of laundry, so care homes can focus on their main priority – taking care of their residents.

HOW OUTSOURCING WITH BERENDSEN WORKS:

1. The latest electronic track and trace technology is used to safely wash, dry, even iron if required, pack and return residents’ clothing.

2. For flat linen items, a simple needs analysis is carried out which establishes how much and what type of linen is required by your home, based on usage, bed changing policies and your residents’ needs.

3. From this, the level of linen stock you need is decided, including a buffer for unex-pected usage. Berendsen provides a rental service for linen including towels, bedding and kitchen linen, which saves additional capital costs for your care home.

4. A service schedule is agreed, which outlines the number of deliveries and collections your care home will receive each week.

5. Clear communication between your staff and Berendsen ensures linen stocks meet the needs of the care home. When linen is required we send a delivery with sufficient items to top stocks back up to required levels.
