What We’ve Been Waiting For

Over the past few months, we have been delighted to see so many upliſting stories as elderly care home residents and staff nationwide receive their COVID-19 vaccine. Here, we’ve compiled a selection of just some of our favourites.

A DAY TO REMEMBER Monday 8th

A CHRISTMAS MIRACLE December 2020 will go down in history as a

momentous occasion, with the first COVID-19 vaccines administered across the country.

The day is set to be etched in the memory of Shannon Cawley, who became the first care worker in the UK to receive the Pfizer/BioNTech coronavirus vaccine on this day.

Shannon, who is a Care Assistant at HC-One’s Victoria Mews care home in Coventry, visited University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire to receive the first dose of the vaccine.

Shannon commented: “It is important for me to have received this vaccination to protect not only myself but to protect our residents and colleagues.”

Over 60 residents at Brunelcare’s Deerhurst Care Home in Bristol received, arguably, the best Christmas present as they were visited by vaccination teams on Christmas Eve.

The staff at the home were amongst the first in the world to receive the vaccine earlier in December.

Speaking at the time, Oona Goldsworthy, CEO of Brunelcare, said: “This is a milestone day for our residents and for Brunelcare. Just two weeks aſter our staff received the vaccine, we can start to see some hope to end the year.”

Deerhurst Care Home Manager Lesley Hobbs said: "I just feel really relieved that we can now protect the residents further - all the families have been really supportive and pleased that we have been able to make this happen.”

“IT WAS ONE OF THE BEST GIFTS I COULD

HAVE ASKED FOR!” For one care home resident, the current worldwide pandemic is not the first she has lived through.

Kathleen Treharne, a resident at Bowbridge Court care home in Dewsbury, was born in 1919 in the midst of the Spanish Flu pandemic.

This year, Kathleen celebrated her 102nd birthday with not only a pamper aſternoon but also by receiving her COVID-19 vaccine.

Kathleen spent her special day being pampered from head to toe, with staff offering their services to provide manicure, pedicure and hair treatments, including a curly blow-dry. The care team surprised Kathleen with a touching personalised memory board that was filled with pictures and memories from her life.

Kathleen, who has lived at Bowbridge Court since 2013, said: “I am so grateful to the team, they really have excelled themselves with my pamper birthday. Every year they pull out all the stops and I wonder how they will top it, but somehow, they always mange to make me feel incredibly special!

“I would never have thought I would live through two global pandemics and I am looking forward to seeing the back of it! The availability of a vaccine feels like light at the end of the tunnel. I was thrilled to receive my first dose; it was one of the best giſts I could have asked for!”
