TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT

Feedback is an important part of the ongoing process at Flourish. They develop the course content from Skills for Care based on the experiences and feedback of previous delegates, ensuring the courses are continually optimised to deliver the most impact.

Areas of particular concern can be given a greater focus, including common challenges in the market, like time management, digital skills and, in particular, CQC inspections. The courses are customised around what delegates have said they need and what concerns they have, delivering what they need to feel more confident about inspections.

Peter said: “There are certainly challenges in the sector and our relationship with Skills for Care means that we are able to help address them through add-ons to the core content. This is key for areas like inspections, where we are able to offer the skills needed for the whole organisation to be ready for them.

“A sign of a strong leader is someone who could receive a message while they are on holiday that an inspection is to take place, but instead of panicking, they can feel certain that they’ve learned the necessary skills to handle the inspection and passed them on to their team, who can handle it in their absence.”

The courses have also evolved to meet the expectations and preferences of modern leaders. Having previously been delivered entirely face-to-face, they switched to online learning during the pandemic and now Flourish offers a choice. This is a recognition that while some may want to learn the traditional way, others might benefit from sessions they can complete from their office in half a day because they can’t commit to a full day. For those learning face-to-face, there are clear benefits beyond the course material itself.

Peter added: “The course is also an open forum for them, a safe space to deal with the challenges without being criticised or facing

any repercussions. They can admit what they are struggling with and find solutions or just find empathy together.”

The impact of the courses has been clear to see from the number of organisations that return to Flourish time and time again, with as many leaders as possible signed up for them to spread the benefits throughout their care teams. Others have arranged face-to-face sessions for groups of their leaders, with the course content customised to include their own values.

One notable example is The Orders of St John Care Trust. In 2021, they chose Flourish (formerly Grey Matter Learning) as their training provider for various courses, including the 'Lead to Succeed' programme. The platform has helped the organisation achieve compliance figures consistently above 90% and foster a culture of continuous professional development.

As Peter explained: “Training people to have the skills they need means they can pass it on to others, which has an onward positive impact. If you are enjoying your day and your job you will have a better impact on the people you are looking after and are responsible for.

“It's that leadership mindset. If they are confident, they will be more effective; making their team more efficient. That positive can-do attitude affects the whole team in a positive way. It really can make a difference.”
