TRAINING & EDUCATION

Upskilling your Workforce

What opportunities do you have in place to show current and potential employees you are serious about their professional development, asks Kevin Edwards, Managing Director of Meddyg Care.

With many parts of the sector looking at various ways to not only attract talent, but also retain the skills required for best practice care, training and education is one area which is being sorely overlooked.

The demands of staff shortages and an ever-increasing population in need of care have only been exacerbated by the pandemic and the rigorous regulations required to certify best practices are adhered to.

However, these pressures have almost doubled on care homes and groups such as ours, where the specialised knowledge needed to ensure high-quality dementia care means there is even less of a pool of employees to hire from.

In Wales, one approach to this challenge has come from the Welsh Government, implementing a Real Living Wage of £9.90 per hour across the sector from April 2022; this is a strong step forward.

Raising wages and benefits is oſten the first port of call for employers to boost recruitment, but workers also have a strong desire to keep their skillset growing.

Having spoken to people across all levels in the sector, supporting staff in their journey towards further professional development is an area commonly overlooked.

Companies which are renowned for training and development will stand well above the rest when it comes to attracting talent, as well as give the additional benefit of keeping your home at the top of the industry as a provider of high-quality care.

While we have invested in building a dedicated training centre, resources such as personalised career and skills progression programmes and regular catchups are just as important.

Ensuring staff have pathways to continue their development is vital to guarantee the best quality of care is being followed alongside encouraging more workers to the industry and your home as it demonstrates a focus on helping your team reach their professional goals.

If feasible, establish a job role dedicated to the areas of training and development to allow your staff to identify the
