REVOLUTIONISING EAR AND
HEARING HEALTHCARE Many care home residents in the UK are hard of hearing. Not only that, due to living within a care home setting many don’t receive any ear and hearing health check-ups for a considerable amount of time – which has been exacerbated further as a result of the pandemic.
“Hearing loss is the largest modifiable risk factor for age- related dementia – responsible for over 8% of cases of dementia among older adults.” (WHO, World Report on Hearing, 2021).
TLC Care Homes recently trialled the Tympa system – a portable, all-in-one hearing health assessment device. It enables patients to undergo digital otoscopy, microsuction wax removal and a hearing screener, delivered by care home staff they already know and trust – whether that be from the bedside or from a wheelchair, it’s in the comfort of their own home. Therefore, many of the associated risks of attending outpatient appointments, can be avoided.
ear, nose and throat (ENT) experts. If a review is requested, an Audiologist or ENT will look at the patient’s images and video and can provide support with diagnosis. This means residents have access to specialist care without the need to wait for and attend an outpatient appointment.
It’s not just wax removal, but cleaning and maintaining hearing aids, carrying out regular hearing assessments, and providing instant access to care when needed. Residents remain engaged and active in the care home community and can communicate better with their families and care staff.

Lorna Badrick, COO TLC Care, said: “To be able to actually address issues there and then and respond in that way, it’s just made such a positive difference to our residents in terms of the life’s that they can then live within our care homes.”
