TRAINING & EDUCATION
don’t have to state that they have dyslexia, or struggled with maths at school, or find desk work challenging. During and since the pandemic, we’ve found that mental health issues such as anxiety, motivation, low confidence, or depression have needed additional interventions to overcome – and sometimes it’s difficult to articulate.
One of the most important messages about the Prince’s Trust services is that whichever area you need help, even with something like building confidence, speaking in public or finding motivation, we can provide support for this on an individual basis to get young people ‘work ready’.
One of the advantages for employers is the networking side of the Prince’s Trust collaboration. Sometimes young people will come to us with an application for a particular role that’s caught their eye; we can work with them to meet the criteria of the job description, so the best possible candidate goes to interview. If the candidate doesn’t get the job offer – which could simply happen because there are lots of candidates for one position – we are able to access a range of other vacancies open, with a prepared candidate ready to go. Employers then start to benefit from having a pool of work ready trainees and/or apprentices ready to step into work.
Employer-specific needs – such as a basic understanding of dementia, or awareness of end-of-life settings – can be addressed during interventions, and employers can be reassured that those put forward with our help have completed the coaching sessions needed to prepare them for what to expect as part of their day-to-day work.
UPSKILLING THE NEXT GENERATION
Reports from the care sector in the media paint a picture of a challenging environment but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t huge benefits to be gained from a career in care.
Working in the care sector can be a very stable, sustained and rewarding career choice. Many of the opportunities are apprenticeship positions do include a structured progression with lots of room to learn more specialised skills and find promotion opportunities with more responsibility, and we can outline the career ladder for young people who aren’t sure about the reliability of progression.

We talk about interventions as a way to coach candidates individually to get them ‘work ready’ but the real opportunity for growth will soon come in the workplace – and this is where the long-term value comes in for both employee and employer. Qube and the Prince’s Trust continue to support young people in their roles, providing a space for feedback, problem solving and additional learning as required.
For young people, it’s also worth considering the breadth of experience offered in a move to the care sector – it’s almost like they gain twice the skillset. For example, if a candidate trained to be a chef in a restaurant, cooking in a restaurant would be their skill set. Training to be a chef or a gardener or receptionist with additional care sector experience widens the experience and range in areas like communication and problem solving quite considerably.
For all those currently considering a move into the care sector, the most important thing to cultivate is simply a willingness to learn. There are so many skills we can help young people to develop, so just to have that motivation to turn up every day and to want to learn is a huge bonus.
Most importantly, I’d like both employers and young people to understand what the Prince’s Trust is offering with the Qube partnership, that you don’t oſten get. Within this programme, if a young person sees a job that they’re interested in but feels really scared about an interview or doesn’t feel like they have the experience, they wouldn’t normally have someone to step in to guide them and ensure they feel confident in an interview setting. They do here.
This reassurance is so incredibly valuable for not only the candidates who could be about to start a long and successful career in care – but the employers too, who can feel certain that we work with candidates for as many sessions as needed to offer them the best workers possible for each and every role.
