10 QUESTIONS
10 Questions with... Derek Timoney
Each issue we ask an industry professional the Tomorrow’s Care 10 Questions. This month, we chatted to Derek Timoney, Co-Founder and Director of Medicare Systems.
Q3
HOW WOULD YOU IMPROVE THE CARE SECTOR?
I would simplify all the bureaucracy and focus on the quality of care. The care industry needs to get the good managers back on the floors instead of in the office. Extra funding is needed so lives can be improved.
Q4 Q5
Q1
HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE CARE INDUSTRY?
I started my career in the care industry over 30 years ago. I worked with a brilliant engineer who developed and made his own hard-wired nurse call systems. We then got involved with Radio Technology and the rest, as they say, is history.
Q2
WHO, IN ANY OTHER INDUSTRY, DO YOU MOST ADMIRE?
I would say Steve Jobs, Founder of Apple. He is a true visionary.
Q6
IF YOU COULD HAVE ANY SUPERPOWER FOR A DAY WHAT
WOULD IT BE? The ability to fly like superman would do me just fine.
WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE FACING THE CARE
INDUSTRY TODAY? The ageing population. The amount of people that are reaching the age of care in comparison to the so little money being put in to care for them. You can look at the comparison in costs; it costs thousands of pounds a week to house prisoners and yet we can’t find more to look aſter the older generation.
IF YOU COULD HAVE A DINNER PARTY WITH ANY THREE PEOPLE,
DEAD OR ALIVE WHO WOULD IT BE? This is a hard question! Well, I would want the dinner party to be fun and entertaining so my first choice would be Frank Sinatra for his stories and his voice. My second choice would be David “Bumble” Lloyd, the cricket commentator for his witty anecdotes and final choice would be Michael Parkinson as he has met so many people I would love some inside knowledge. With that, my family and my Mum and Dad, who I miss so much just to tell them how much I am as a person is down to them.
Q7 - 38 -
WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU COULD GIVE TO SOMEONE NEW
COMING INTO THE CARE PROFESSION? Remember the industry is about care and to try to make a difference because,
and remember, one day we will need care and will want people to treat us with respect and dignity.
Q8
WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE IN A FUTURE ISSUE OF
TOMORROW’S CARE? A feature looking at the history of the care home, how it has developed, and what it could be like in the future.
Q9
THIS YEAR HAS BEEN AN EVENTFUL ONE; WITH THIS
IN MIND, WHAT DO YOU THINK THE FUTURE HOLDS FOR THE CARE INDUSTRY? I have certainly seen a rise in the quality of new builds and, for many of the smaller homes I visit, many are investing in refurbishments. Yes, some are closing but as long as we see a rise in the quality of care this can only be good. The funding issue remains and this has got to be addressed.
Q10
NORMAN NIVEN, FROM
TELMENOW.COM, ASKED:
DO YOU THINK THAT BREXIT WILL BE USEFUL TO HIDE BAD NEWS? Not really-we get used to bad news all the time, anyone trying this old trick may regret it.
