WASTE & RECYCLING

Lindsay Forrest, Site Facilities Manager for Jewish Care, explained: “In 2010, our head office switched to a new site in Golders Green. BRITA Vivreau approached us regarding its ViTap offering hot and cold water. A great product for a busy head office, it offers filtered drinking water without having the waiting time of kettles. We started to think – if it’s good for staff, it may actually be very good for residents as well.”

“Time is important in a care

home; those five extra minutes is time a relative can spend with their mum or dad.”

Taking Care Of

Every Drop We found out how a care provider has

reduced its wastage significantly by investing in BRITA Vivreau’s drinking water systems.

Jewish Care is the largest health and social care organisation serving the Jewish community in London and the South East of England. It runs over 70 centres and services and touches the lives of 10,000 people every week.

With its emphasis on exemplary personalised care for its residents, the care provider partnered with BRITA Vivreau and invested in 21 ViTap drinking water systems across seven of its care homes.

The award-winning ViTap dispenses mains-fed purified chilled still, sparkling and instant boiling hot water from one single tap with a touch sensor control and zero splash. By investing in ViTaps and therefore purifying water on site, the care home will no longer have to bring in pre-bottled water, therefore reducing transport miles, but will also save time not having to order it, find space to store it all or recycle the bottles.

Incorporating high performance ice bank refrigeration, the ViTap is capable of delivering high volumes of water at peak demand times. There is even an intelligent safety feature on the ViTap which prevents boiling water from being dispensed by accident.

Lindsay continued: “By using the ViTap, a resident can quickly and easily get themselves a chilled still or sparkling water or a hot drink, without having to wait for a kettle to boil or for someone else to wait on them. Time is important in a care home; those five extra minutes is time a relative can spend with their mum or dad. For a person with dementia it’s important because they may want a cup of tea but aſter a few minutes may forget why they’ve boiled the kettle. With this system they can have a hot drink instantly.

“We can also be confident in terms of safety with the ViTap as there is a mechanism in place for the boiling hot water where you have to touch the button twice and hold, reducing the chances of residents burning themselves on a hot kettle.”

BRITA Vivreau’s ViTap drinking water system has assisted Jewish Care with its objectives to reduce waste, use less energy and minimise its impact on the environment.

Lindsay states: “You have considerable challenges with environmental policy for a care home. As people get older they do require more heating which uses up more energy than your average home would. We have to have certain levels of lighting for people with dementia and visual impairment.

“We now have no deliveries of bottles of water coming in,

therefore no wasted plastic or glass. With the ViTap, the correct amount of water is dispensed; we are no longer wasting energy by boiling more water than we need or having to run the tap to wait for it to get cold.

“The ViTap helps compensate the extra heating and lighting we need to provide for our residents - it helps relieve our environmental impact without compromising the wellbeing of our residents.

“Working together with Vivreau has been a seamless affair, really excellent – the service has been fantastic.”

Reducing waste is an increasingly important issue across all sectors including care. By investing in systems that reduce waste as a well as time, a care home will set itself up for a sustainable future.
