Could A Degree Help Hospices Provide Better Care?

Atul Patel, Senior Teaching Fellow and academic course leader at Cass Centre for Charity

Effectiveness, discusses how a new MSc degree could help leaders in the hospice sector meet future challenges.

Leaders working in the hospice sector are facing many complex challenges. They work in a highly sensitive environment, providing care for people with terminal and life-limiting conditions. There’s also significant funding issues to contend with, as well as volatility brought about by a constantly changing socio-economic landscape.

Currently hospices provide vital care for around200,000 people each year, as well as support for families, especially

bereavement support. But, with the number of people aged 85 years and over expected to double by 2035, and the number of people aged 100 or over expected to increase eight-fold to more than 100,000, demand for hospice care is likely to grow exponentially – a situation that will place even greater pressure on the sector and on the shoulders of leaders.

Funding is a major concern. Currently, adult hospices in the UK receive around a third of their income from the government, with the rest coming from

community fundraising, hospice charity shops, hospice lotteries and investments. Collectively, charitable hospices in the UK need to raise around £1billion a year from their local communities.

The level of statutory funding varies across the UK and it’s likely that government funding won’t be able to keep pace with future demand. Increasing the need to raise more funds through community fundraising and new sources of funding will be a core priority for hospice leaders.
