RECRUITMENT GAINING THE SKILLS TO LEAD


IN CHALLENGING TIME Cass Business School’s Centre for Charity Effectiveness (Cass CCE) has teamed up with Hospice UK to offer a new hospice leadership module from October 2017 which will be part of Cass CCE’s two-year charity master’s programme. Applications for 2017/18 are now open and £4K bursaries are also available fromHospice UK.


The new module will equip leaders with the skills they need to address key challenges and maximise opportunities in the sector.


Hospice UK chose to partner with Cass CCE because of its approach to teaching which encourages academic and highly practical learning, enabling students to apply everything they learn in real-life work situations.


Recruitment and retention of care staff is another issue. Having people with the right skills is obviously essential to provide the best quality care and support for people, however, data from charity Skills for Care suggests that social care providers struggle to retain staff, with the industry experiencing a staff turnover rate of 27% - nearly twice the average for other professions in the UK.

Staff shortages are reported across the whole health and social care sector, a situation unlikely to be improved by Brexit, with recent government figures suggesting the number of non-British EU nationals working in the UK’s social care system has shot up by more than 40% in the past three years.


It’s clear that hospice leaders are operating in highly difficult times and need to be at the top of their game to address these challenges.


One of the ways they could improve their skills and capabilities is through education, training and peer-to-peer learning, and a new two-year degree course, which starts this October, is seeking to do just that.

The course will give students a deeper understanding of the voluntary sector, improve their knowledge of marketing and fundraising and managing resources and build the foundations for stronger management. It will also focus on key leadership issues, such as how to lead and manage change and how to manage people and teams effectively.


Leaders will be encouraged to draw on their own experiences and learn from course leaders and fellow students who come from a diverse range of organisations. Peer-to-peer learning is an essential element of the programme and leaders will be encouraged to network and share experiences with others in the hospice sector, as well as the wider voluntary sector during the two-year course.

One of the first things leaders will consider is the history of the hospice sector and its legacy for leaders. This will help them better understand the culture of hospices, their position in health and social care systems and their strengths and weaknesses in relation to strategic opportunities and threats. This part of the course will also look at the relationship that hospices have with local communities which is becoming increasingly importance in terms of generating funding.


The core elements of leadership will also be covered including strategy,


culture, partnerships, workforce development, quality definition and improvement, teamwork and leadership styles and structures. The strengths and weaknesses of hospices today will also be analysed and how these relate to the strategic opportunities and threats they could face in the future.

Overall, the course will encourage leaders to consider the skills and behaviours required of hospice leaders today to ensure their organisation is delivering care of the highest quality to those most in need. Leaders will also be shown how to address current challenges related to workforce recruitment and retention, generating income, responding to and managing significant expectations within finite resources, continuous quality improvement and effective team work across the whole organisation.


The future of the sector and how best to prepare for it will also be explored, including the potential contribution of new models of care supported by innovation, ethical issues, opportunities for system-wide improvement and new strategic partnerships.


With the hospice environment constantly evolving and becoming more competitive, leaders need key skills to manage organisations successfully, as well as a deep understanding of the clinical issues facing them now and in the future.


We hope this course will contribute hugely to the development of leaders in the sector and strengthen the valuable role of hospices in society. Our goal is to develop leaders who can not only improve standards in the sector and drive up the quality of care but also widen the influence of hospices to engage those who set national policy and commission hospice care.
