FURNITURE & INTERIORS

A Safe and Stylish Solution

James Dadd, Marketing Director at AKW, shows how a person-centric approach to bathroom design has helped both carers and residents at Lypiatt Lodge in Cheltenham, and how this success can be replicated in other care homes.

With 80% of care and nursing home residents having some degree of dementia or severe memory problems, according to the Alzheimer’s Society, providing dementia-friendly bathrooms is a priority for care homes. High surveillance is needed in the bathroom, however it is possible to create ‘dementia-friendly bathrooms’ that improve safety and promote independence. AKW has long been known for providing high-quality, accessible bathroom solutions that are stylish, robust and encourage independence for residents; and one of the company’s many success stories

includes the Grade II listed nursing home, Lypiatt Lodge, in Cheltenham.

ACCESSIBILITY IN PRACTICE AKW enabled the renovation of 31 luxury dementia-friendly en-suite bathrooms. Beltaine Designs, an independent spatial and interior design consultancy service, worked in partnership with AKW to ensure all bathrooms within the nursing home were dementia-friendly and would meet its residents’ wide range of needs.

AKW oversaw the full lifecycle of the bathroom renovations, from initial consultation to surveying and delivery.

A full range of AKW products were used in the renovation, including TMV3- approved thermostatic mixer taps with extended levers for easy operation; bathroom wall panels and wall boards; bathroom lights and extractor fans. The company also provided electric low surface temperature radiators, to eliminate burning accidents, and a range of its specialist showering facilities, including low level access, walk-in showers and wet rooms.

The new bathrooms are meeting the needs of both staff and residents in the nursing home. They feature a contemporary and attractive aesthetic
