Adopting more sustainable cleaning practices

Daniel Took, Head of Professional Product Marketing at Kärcher UK, discusses the different ways facilities managers can be more sustainable in the workplace.

Sustainability is an increasingly important focus for many within the cleaning industry, as businesses take huge steps to reduce CO2

emissions, waste production, and water usage to meet their sustainability targets.

Whilst the focus often remains on individual actions, factoring in the impact of newly developed equipment and machinery is often forgotten. Facilities managers should begin to build these into their impact reports to help them understand whether they are truly meeting their targets.

Switching to equipment suppliers that are focused on their own climate impact will pay dividends in helping all parties meet their sustainability goals. Kärcher UK has implemented robust plans for its factories to be climate- neutral and to reduce CO2

emissions by 21%. It is also

focusing intensely on product packaging to increase the number of recycled plastics in its products.

Changes such as these from manufacturers will help to ensure that the cleaning industry can move towards a more

sustainable outlook, however this alone will not suffice. It’s crucial that manufacturers take steps to translate their environmental efforts in the manufacturing stage to everyday cleaning solutions.

Meeting the cleaning goals

There are three main goals that underpin what facilities managers need to consider when it comes to incorporating sustainable cleaning solutions: Quality, Productivity, and Sustainability.

Quality is a key focus for facilities managers as they need to ensure the solutions used translate into results. Growing operational costs, employee training, and business demands have led to a greater focus on productivity for facilities managers. Ensuring customers’ cleaning standards are met, alongside developing cleaning performance through workflow optimisation, mechanisation, and easy-to- use products will result in high quality cleaning that provides the same result every time.
