Celebrating the remarkable career of Denise Hanson
As Denise Hanson begins her retirement, she leaves behind an extraordinary legacy that has helped shape not only the British Institute of Cleaning Science (BICSc), but also the careers and professional development of countless individuals across the industry.
After more than three decades of dedication to BICSc and the wider cleaning and hygiene industry, the time has come to celebrate one of the Institute’s most respected, influential and admired figures, Denise Hanson.
For many within the profession, Denise has been a constant presence and a trusted source of guidance, expertise and leadership. Since becoming involved with BICSc in the 1990s, she has undertaken an impressive range of roles, serving as a moderator, assessor, Council Member, Chair of Council, mentor, adviser and senior leader. For almost a decade she has also been an integral member of the BICSc Senior Management Team, helping to guide the Institute through periods of growth, innovation and change.
What sets Denise apart is not simply the breadth of her experience, but the depth of her influence. Throughout her career she has supported learners, assessors, members, volunteers and colleagues, helping them develop their skills, build their confidence and achieve their professional ambitions. It would be difficult to find many long-standing members of BICSc who haven't benefitted in some way from Denise’s knowledge, encouragement or advice. Her impact can be seen throughout the organisation and across the wider cleaning and hygiene community.
Professionally, Denise brought a wealth of industry experience to every role she undertook. With more than 30 years of cleaning and hygiene expertise, she established a reputation as a highly successful senior manager with exceptional communication, negotiation and leadership skills. Her career spanned local government, Ministry of Defence contracts, major retail organisations, shopping centres, cleanroom environments and blue-chip corporate facilities before bringing that extensive experience to BICSc.
Those who worked alongside Denise speak not only of her professionalism and expertise, but also of her character. She became known for her honesty, integrity and unwavering commitment to doing what was right. She was someone who could be relied upon to provide thoughtful advice, offer constructive challenge when needed and always put the interests of the profession at the heart of her decision-making. At the same time, her approachable nature and sense of humour ensured she built strong relationships and lasting friendships throughout the industry.
Over the years, Denise has given countless hours in support of BICSc and the wider profession. She has played a significant role in maintaining and enhancing standards, supporting assessors and trainers, guiding members and

Her influence can be seen in the many professionals she has mentored, the standards she has helped uphold, the colleagues she has supported and the culture she has helped create. She has been instrumental in fostering professionalism, encouraging excellence and championing the values that continue to underpin BICSc today.
As Denise retires, she does so with the gratitude, respect and admiration of colleagues, members and industry professionals alike. While her day-to-day involvement with BICSc may be ending, the legacy she leaves behind will continue to influence the Institute for many years to come.
