Battery specialist Leoch Battery UK details how new lithium technology can power industrial cleaning equipment.


Industrial cleaning machines that work on batteries are widespread in sectors such as healthcare, education and industry, and it has become easier and quicker to clean with these devices.


The advantages of battery-powered cleaning machines are clear: they reduce emissions, remove trailing cables, and limit noise. Being able to fast charge and have a long deep-cycle life are common requirements for floor sweepers and scrubber dryers, so as an effective power source for uninterrupted cleaning operations, batteries also offer reduced equipment downtime and enable maximum operational efficiencies.


High-performing lithium tech


Maintenance-free batteries such as AGM or gel have long been the choice of cleaning equipment manufacturers, equipment suppliers and cleaning contractors although flooded or wet cell batteries are still used in a number of machines.


Although you may have relied upon lead acid batteries in the past, there is a relatively new technology that provides all of these benefits and more: lithium. It’s the perfect option when the weight of the battery and turnaround recharge speed are top requirements.


While it’s proving to be successful in a number of mobile applications, lithium iron phosphate has been slow to emerge into the cleaning industry. It is widely available for small equipment such as vacuum cleaners and small scrubber dryers and it’s clear to see its advantages – especially for applications such as daytime cleaning, even though conventional battery technology offers the advantages of cableless cleaning.


The fast-charging capability of lithium batteries and the ability to have a ‘plug-and-play’ replacement battery are key benefits. One of the additional advantages of the new lithium technology over a lead-acid battery is its weight. Whilst lead is one of the heaviest metals around, lithium is one of the lightest and the latest lithium-based batteries are up to 40% lighter than their lead-acid equivalents.


New lithium range for UK industry


Leoch Battery UK has recently launched a new range of 12V and 24V lithium batteries, ideal for powering cleaning equipment. The new Leoch Lithium LFeLi series offers extremely high cycle life, surpassing the performance levels of lead-acid batteries, with up to 2000 at 100% depth of discharge (DoD) and up to 5000 at 50% DOD.


The new batteries’ partial state of charge resilience is a major advantage as, unlike many other batteries, opportunity charging can take place at convenient times throughout a user’s working day to minimise idle time. They are also the perfect green alternative to lead-acid batteries as their longer lifespan means that they generate less waste.
