MSL urges adoption of EN 17486

MSL is urging manufacturers of healthcare wipes to ensure their products meet the increasingly critical EN 17486 sporicidal efficacy standard due to rising demands from NHS trusts and other healthcare providers.

As these organisations place greater emphasis on proven activity against Clostridioides difficile (C.difficile), EN 17486 is appearing more frequently in tenders and procurement specifications, signalling a clear shift in buyer expectations. Furthermore, a growing compliance gap is emerging, with many products not yet aligned with the sporicidal requirements set out in EN 17486.

MSL is equipped to perform EN 17486 testing and support manufacturers in demonstrating the level of sporicidal efficacy healthcare environments now expect. EN 17486 sets out a robust method for demonstrating sporicidal efficacy, including against C.difficile, under conditions designed to reflect real world wipe use. By assessing products in a way that mirrors practical application, the standard provides a level of assurance traditional sporicidal tests often fail to capture.

Megan Barrett, Operations Manager at MSL, commented: “EN 17486 is a standard no brand supplying into healthcare

can afford to ignore. Healthcare environments are rightly demanding stronger evidence that wipes perform effectively against C.difficile, and this method provides that assurance. We’re now seeing a clear gap between traditional sporicidal testing and the level of evidence healthcare providers expect. Manufacturers supplying into clinical settings need to be testing to EN 17486, not only to meet procurement requirements but to ensure their efficacy claims genuinely reflect real world use.”

MSL’s EN 17486 capability complements its wider disinfectant and wipe testing portfolio, including EN 16615, EN 13697, EN 13704, EN 14476 and other key standards for medical and non medical applications. Its expertise also includes product claim support for the BPR (Biocidal Product Regulation), claims substantiation, safety data sheets, user trials, hygiene auditing, cleanroom validation (UV and airborne disinfection) and tailored solutions for specific testing needs. Its in-house microbiology and virology labs provide a comprehensive range of standard tests, including efficacy testing against bacteria, fungi, spores, viruses, mycobacteria and legionella. The majority of its testing, including biocidal and virology testing, is accredited by UKAS to ISO/IEC 17025:2017 standards.

Kia Oval appoints 14forty

14forty has secured a contract with London’s Kia Oval cricket stadium, home to Surrey County Cricket Club, to provide cleaning and waste management services.

The contract involves major match day cleaning, pre- match and post-match cleaning and waste segregation ready for removal.

The stadium in Kennington, which has capacity for 27,500 people and hosts regular international cricket matches, requires a unique strategy to deliver FM services in a live, high-pressure environment.

Matchday cleaning requires adaptability to the tempo of the game, the crowd and the weather. In response, 14forty has implemented a flexible staffing model involving a 120-strong team to ensure cricket fans enjoy a great experience.

14forty was awarded the contract following a competitive tender process, with its bespoke and quality-led proposal standing out against competitors. The FM provider is also helping the Kia Oval improve its recycling performance and waste removal.

Matthew Lockton, Sales Director at 14forty, added: “We’re delighted to partner with an iconic stadium like The Kia Oval and to have been entrusted with providing FM services for matchdays – an integral part of the fan experience.”

Zac Halliday, Head of Facilities & Development at The Kia Oval, commented: “14forty has already made an undeniable impact at the Kia Oval – providing a best-in-class standard of delivery throughout the busy summer schedule. We’ve been impressed with how quickly they’ve risen to the challenge of understanding the needs of the site, and by their collaborative approach to continuously seek improvements to the matchday experience for everyone.”
