HSE PUBLISH NEW GUIDANCE FOR CLEANING

OPERATIVES The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has published new guidance on how cleaning operatives can manage musculoskeletal disorders.

The guidance states that the most common work-related injuries reported by cleaning operatives are musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), most commonly aches, pains and discomfort. It states that this can often come from the repetitive, labour-intensive tasks that cleaners face on a daily basis, including mopping or sweeping floors or operating heavy machinery.

AWARD OF CE MARKING TO TASKI INTELLIBOTS BRINGS HANDS- FREE CLEANING TO 33 EUROPEAN

COUNTRIES Sealed Air’s Diversey Care division has announced that it has achieved CE Marking for its TASKI Intellibot SWINGOBOT 1650 machine.

The demand for automated cleaning machines is growing rapidly, particularly in the world’s developed countries. This is due to significant advances in robotic technology, labour shortages and the need for higher productivity in daily or routine cleaning tasks.

Since the acquisition of Intellibot in March 2015, Sealed Air has won a prestigious Innovation Award for the TASKI Swingobot 755 in October 2015 at the ISSA/INTERCLEAN exhibition in Las Vegas, and sales of the robotic machines have reached new record levels.

The company has also received a surge of interest in the machines from European buyers and the achievement of CE Marking means that Diversey Care can now answer that demand. Machines have already shipped to customers in the UK, Benelux, Scandinavia, France, Spain and Germany where ISS has purchased three units for evaluation ahead of a possible worldwide adoption.

Anders Dedenroth Høj, Cleaning Category Manager of ISS Global Procurement and Supply Chain organisation welcomed the award of CE Marking, saying: “At ISS

The HSE states: “Cleaning work is demanding and labour-intensive. Many tasks involve using cleaning machines and heavy manual work, including mopping, wiping surfaces, polishing, moving rubbish bags, furniture and equipment, putting strain on the heart, muscles and other tissues.

“Cleaners are often required to work in awkward postures for long periods, which may lead to long-term damage.

“Cleaners work in buildings which are generally planned for other workers and not designed with cleaning in mind, where issues such as access, the location of taps and storage facilities, and the use of unsuitable floor materials can also pose problems.”

The HSE also added that cleaning operatives are just as likely to be affected by MSDs as other workers, but that managing the risks effectively

can significantly reduce the risk of work-related injuries.

The organisation has set up a special page on its website, outlining the ways in which cleaners are at risk, as well as what companies can do to recognise the problems and manage the risks.

The term musculoskeletal disorder can describe a variety of strain, sprain and overuse problems affecting the body’s muscles, joints and nerves, with the back, neck, shoulders and upper limbs particularly at risk. Problems can include anything from backache and slipped discs, to upper limb disorders, tenosynovitis, pain, numbness, swelling and tingling in the hands and wrists, and these conditions are often caused or made worse by work activities.

we are focused on servicing our customers, helping them reach their purpose by thinking creatively and taking advantage of the latest innovations. This is exactly what we intend with these machines. We believe that effective, hands- free machines offer us a chance to rewrite the playbook when it comes to effective and economic cleaning of our clients’ buildings.”

Jean-Marc Lille-Pallette, VP Europe at Diversey Care added: "Attaining CE Marking is another critical milestone for Diversey Care on our journey to bring the cost and productivity benefits of hands-free robotic cleaning to all parts of the world.”

Hands-free TASKI SWINGOBOT 1650 machines dramatically improve the economics of cleaning. Extended battery life means they can work across multiple shifts while remote diagnostics and reporting means that operators can also track the location and performance of their machine and are alerted when human attention is required. Locations that are ideal for cleaning by TASKI Intellibot SWINGOBOT 1650 machines include schools, hospitals, shopping centres, and airports.
