EXPERT ADVICE

MAINTAIN AND GAIN

Angus Dodds, Head of Restoration Services at ServiceMaster Clean, explains how regular, professional maintenance of floors will add real value to your bottom line.

Modern successful businesses meet the range of corporate challenges with a refreshing zeal, and in a way that demonstrates that they are positively different.

Consciously or sub-consciously, first impressions still play a pivotal part in the customer’s decision making process. In a commercial setting floor coverings take a daily pounding, with regular footfall, the impact of the weather, spillages, tradesmen and courier deliveries all adding to the repeated wear and tear that can lead to damage to the floor covering; but that damage is not just restricted to the floor – a brand or reputation can be dashed if the cleanliness and appearance falls short of what is expected. It’s the equivalent of a sharp dressed business person with shabby shoes, their image will be remembered – but not for the right reasons.

In the hospitality and retail trade, customers may decide after just two steps that they want to spend their money elsewhere – first impressions really do count, your image and the

customer experience has never been so important – and your competitors know that too.

When a company invests in a new floor, they invest in an image and look that is attractive to customers and is a direct reflection of the business. Although we are conditioned to make sure that our cars are maintained at regular intervals, floors are rarely maintained properly. If image is important then it makes sense to consider maintenance programmes for your floors; whether it’s an entrance carpet or a hard floor surface, regular maintenance will make all the difference and it need not be expensive.

Over time the build-up of dirt and soiling will increase the wear and tear and will reduce the effective lifetime of a carpet, in both appearance and physical terms.

Hard floors will generally be protected by a coat or finish that ensures that the integrity of the material that the floor is made of is not subject to wear. Failure to ensure the floor is maintained will see the finish/coat wear away and the

flooring itself will become irreparably damaged – it is no different to running your car engine without oil.

MAINTAIN YOUR FLOORS, ENHANCE YOUR IMAGE AND

ADD VALUE TO YOUR BUSINESS We know it’s important the way customers perceive a business but what about the people that work for the business, particularly your staff and even suppliers and site contractors? The fabric of your building and especially your floors make a bold statement about the business. The most important asset to any business is its people – you will attract better recruits and improve productivity if the surroundings are pleasant and welcoming. I saw a caption attributed to Richard Branson which I thought was quite powerful: “Train your people so they can leave, treat them well enough so that they don’t.”

If you want the best service from your suppliers and if you want the contractors to respect your workspace then you need to believe
