CASE STUDIES

HERE TO STAY

After securing a long-term maintenance contract with the Hilton Garden Inn in Birmingham, Servest changed the way the hotel looks after its floors with the introduction of two brand-new cleaning machines. Here, they tell us all about the transformation and the positive impact that it has had on both staff and guests.

The Hilton Garden Inn, Birmingham is located just nine miles from Birmingham International Airport, and within easy reach of the city, making it a popular destination for tourists and businesspeople alike. Being a busy international hotel with a large number of visitors and guests means it can be a challenge to keep floors clean – particularly in areas of high footfall, such as the hotel's generous- sized lobby, its business centre, drinks lounge and dining area.

These areas are utilised around the clock, so factor in a typical wet British winter with a constant stream of visitors coming through with wet or muddy feet and ensuring the floors are kept spotless with minimum disruption to guests can be a challenge. In conditions such as these, standard mops which require constant water changes and wet floor warnings, are simply not efficient, and often external parties have to be brought in several times a year to carry out essential maintenance repairs to repair scratches and marks.

Servest has secured a long-term partnership with the Hilton Garden Inn's owner, global hospitality company Valor Hospitality Partners, to deliver housekeeping services to the hotel, including bedroom and public area cleaning, laundry management, porterage and specialist floor cleaning.

With innovation a key part of the service provider's offering, since the

start of its cleaning contract at the hotel in March last year, Servest has introduced just two machines that have streamlined hard floor care, making the job easier, safer and much more user-friendly.

The process begins with the use of a cylindrical scrubber dryer designed to cut through grease and kill germs on all types of hard floor surfaces including; concrete, resin, stone and safety flooring. The machine is designed to reach even the most difficult to clean spaces and will fit through doorways, enabling the cleaning of a wide variety of areas, and eliminating the need for any additional mopping and floor cleaning.

Unlike the mop-based system that was being used before Servest took on the contract, this machine features a simple waste tank emptying procedure, which cuts down on the amount of time needed to clean the floor. It also has an on board squeegee raising and lowering mechanism for easier access to all levels of flooring.

Because the machine is battery operated it has no trailing cables for guests to trip over, and it further increases occupational Health and Safety by reducing slips and trips because floors are safe and dry immediately after use.

For a deeper clean and polish an innovative new machine with floor pads that contain billions of microscopic diamonds can then be

used. This works on all surfaces – terrazzo floor, ceramic tiles, natural stone or concrete – by using a different pad for each type of flooring. Not only does this technology clean and polish the surface, it can actually get the scratches out of the floors which can then be buffed for the sheen required; whether the hotel prefers the stone look finish, or a high sheen marble look.

Both machines are quiet so there is no disruption to guests, and fewer chemicals are required as the machines do most of the cleaning work. Since their introduction, quarterly maintenance repairs are no longer necessary. This is because repairs are factored into the daily cleaning regime – meaning there is no need to get specialist flooring subcontractors in.

Because these machines are immediately available on site, the cleaning team can respond to the ever-changing footfall of people. They're quieter, more professional looking and help ensure that the public areas maintain the highest quality of cleanliness, day and night.

By providing staff with the right kind of equipment, which is easier to use because the machinery is doing the work – the cleaning staff are assured they have the correct tools for the job, and as a result are more motivated to perform at an optimum level.
