CASE STUDIES

MAKING A GRAND ENTRANCE

One of the first things that you notice when you walk into a building is cleanliness, and selecting the right entrance matting system can play a big part in making a great impression. Milliken tell us all about their Entrance Flooring Solutions and how one particular system is creating a positive image at Beijing Airport.

Up to 90% of the soiling entering a facility is ‘walked in’ through the front door, which can result in several kilos of dirt brought in per day (rain can double or even treble this amount). When you think that approximately 40% of a maintenance budget is allocated to floor cleaning, and that efficient matting can save up to 65% of the cleaning costs dedicated to floors, it makes sense to choose your entrance flooring solution very carefully. This can also lead to significant future savings on floor covering replacement.

For the best protection against the outdoor elements, public spaces and commercial buildings can benefit from a three-part entryway system. Depending on the size of the area, this system ensures that there is at least 25 feet of walk off matting, which results in most dirt and moisture being prevented from entering the building. In zone one, a scraper product outside the entrance stops the dirt from first entering the building. The second zone comprises a combination of a scraper product and textile construction, which attacks the primary level of moisture and small particulates. The third zone is the 100% textile product, to target any remaining soil and moisture.

With an efficient entrance flooring system in place, building cleaning costs can be reduced significantly, as less dirt and moisture enter the building. Designed specifically for implementing the three-part entryway system, the OBEX range from Milliken offers a further cost advantage as it stands up to heavy wear and tear and provides a long lifetime if maintained as per manufacturer’s recommendations. The modular tile range is suitable for indoor and outdoor installations and offers

contractors better cost-in-use in public spaces than other mat systems. The modular tile design means that it is simple to install and replace if damage should occur, and small areas can be replaced easily and cost-effectively with minimum disruption.

Because of its high performance in dirt and moisture collection, the OBEX modular entrance matting system has been utilised in the world’s busiest airports, including Atlanta and Beijing, to secure clean and safe floors in their demanding, high traffic areas. However, while selecting the right product is a good starting point, making sure it continues to perform is equally important. Daily vacuuming of the matting area and periodic deep cleaning are recommended to maintain durable performance.

The OBEX installation in Beijing Airport highlights the importance of this process. As the second busiest airport in the world with 90 million passengers per year, Beijing Airport Management requires efficient matting to maintain cleanliness in the building and prevent the risk of slips and falls on their hard floors. The OBEX matting system was specified and installed, but after a period of time, the matting began to look dirty – showing that it is clearly doing its job.

After a site evaluation and meeting with the management, it was found that

while a daily vacuum was done, the airport staff never used a hot water extraction machine to clean the matting areas. A deep clean was then carried out, and the process of water mixed with detergent penetrated the textile, catching the soiling before being immediately extracted. This left minimum moisture that quickly dries out, thanks to the open construction of the OBEX patented product concept, and the matting looked as good as new, as can be seen in the before and after pictures.

Milliken therefore recommends regular vacuuming and periodic deep cleaning, to ensure that textile performance is maintained and product durability is secured. They offer a five-year wear guarantee on the OBEX matting system, providing that this regular maintenance is performed.
