CARPETS LEISURELY REFURBS

Dual-bond systems, utilising adhesives with different characteristics, allow carpets to be easily lifted along with underlay when they need to be replaced, without damaging the subfloor. This makes them ideal for use in areas that require regular refurbishment, explains F. Ball.

When installing carpets over large areas, including function rooms, corridors and entertainment areas, flooring contractors should select an adhesive that will develop a strong enough bond to hold floorcoverings securely in place for the lifetime of the floorcovering. However, floorcoverings installed with such adhesives will require mechanical removal when it comes to refurbishing these areas.

For this reason, products have been developed that allow the creation of a peelable bond which stops carpet or underlay moving laterally when subject to normal foot traffic, holding floorcoverings firmly in place for the installation’s lifetime, while allowing them to be removed and replaced without significant damage to the subfloor.

HOW TO INSTALL

The type of bond achieved when using F. Ball and Co. Ltd.’s Styccobond F40, for example, depends on when the floorcovering is laid into the adhesive. Laying the floorcovering into the wet adhesive gives a permanent bond. However, the water-based adhesive dries to form a transparent, permanently tacky coating, creating a release bond for underlays.

This can form part of a dual-bond system, where flooring contractors install underlay onto the tacky coating before adhering carpet to the underlay using a specialist adhesive for textile floorcoverings, such as F. Ball’s Styccobond F3, which will develop the high bond strength required to withstand expected levels of wear.

PERMANENT BOND

Styccobond F3 is a water-based rubber/resin flooring adhesive that offers excellent wet grab and rapidly builds up a high bond strength. This delivers a flooring installation that won’t ruck, move or lift throughout its working life, making it suitable for areas that are expected to be subject to high foot traffic in hotel and leisure settings.

The adhesive is suitable for installing a wide range of textile floorcoverings, including hessian, felt, secondary latex and rubber foam backed carpets, as well as cork tiles up to 3.2mm thick. It can be applied over Stopgap smoothing compounds, structurally sound, smooth, dry subfloors of concrete and sand/cement screed, plywood, flooring grade chipboard and hardboard. It is also protected against bio-degradation and can withstand wet cleaning, which is essential for maintaining the appearance of carpeted venues.

Both Styccobond F40 and Styccobond F3 are suitable for use over normal underfloor heating systems and are also approved for use in marine flooring installations, making them suitable for use in combination to install carpet on board cruise ships.

36 5-STAR PERFORMANCE

F. Ball’s Styccobond F40 and Styccobond F3 adhesives were used to adhere new luxury Axminster carpet in different locations throughout the ballroom and adjoining corridors of Grosvenor House, the five-star luxury hotel on Park Lane, London, as part of a major refurbishment.

Using high performance, market-leading products meant that contractors were able to achieve the perfect finish required for such an illustrious hotel.

On arriving at the hotel, the contractors found that the carpet floorcoverings had already been removed, as refurbishment work was already underway at the hotel. The concrete subfloors were dry, clean and in good condition, so there was no need to install a smoothing compound prior to the installation of the new floorcoverings.

As the areas being re-fitted receive a significant amount of foot-traffic all year round, it was crucial that the installation was both quick and durable. Once the subfloors had been prepared, contractors from Welwyn Design applied Styccobond F40 to the subfloor to create a release bond for the new installation. When the adhesive had dried to a tacky coating, the contractors installed a new underlay to protect the carpet and provide added comfort. Styccobond F3 was then used to permanently bond the new 12-row Axminster carpet throughout the 4,000m² area.

Commenting on the use of F. Ball products at the Grosvenor House hotel, Simon Gauduchon, director of Welwyn Design, said: “We’ve used F. Ball products for 30 years and we’ve never had any issues. The products always work well, and their reps are always available if you need any advice.

“Obviously with such a large job for a very high-profile client, we couldn’t risk anything going wrong. With F. Ball you know exactly what you’re going to get; good, reliable products.”
