CAMPEN TRANSFORMS CARPET WASTE

STAND: C67 CAMPEN Machinery, a key player in carpet backing, nonwoven and airlaid technology, is making significant strides in carpet recycling. By partnering with leading carpet manufacturers, CAMPEN aims to create a circular economy by upcycling waste materials and using sustainable alternatives to plastics.

Combining Knowledge

Using CAMPEN’s advanced airlaid pilot line, heavy and stable samples have been produced from recycled carpets and carpet waste, including glue and backing. These samples, while not final products, show what can be achieved through further development. This project highlights CAMPEN’s ability to provide both high-tech machinery and expert knowledge to create innovative recycling solutions.

The recycled carpet materials are highly versatile and can be used for more than just carpets. For example, the automotive industry could use these materials as secondary backing, underlay, or insulation, supporting current market needs and promoting sustainability.

technical support, including free training courses delivered at the F. Ball Centre of Excellence in Staffordshire. Contractors attending the show can also find out how to become a member of the Ball Rewards loyalty programme, which entitles them to claim cashback each time they purchase F. Ball products, as well as a range of exclusive benefits, such as the opportunity to enter regular competitions and earn extra cashback on promotional products.

Delegates are invited to attend F. Ball’s popular drinks reception at the F. Ball stand on the Monday afternoon of the show.

F. Ball managing director Darren Kenyon said: “The Flooring Show is one of the most important events in our calendar, so we’re excited to be back and catching up with customers and seeing new faces. We’re also looking forward to sharing new developments

Partnership with Autefa

CAMPEN has also teamed up with Autefa to make these recycled materials even stronger. At Autefa’s facility in Linz, Austria, the materials were hydroentangled, resulting in an even tougher and more durable product. This process shows that carpet waste can be turned into valuable resources suitable for various industries, including automotive and construction.

Recycling process explained

The recycling process starts with shredding carpet waste, including latex and backing, into fibres using a hammer mill. These fibres are then processed through CAMPEN’s airlaid test facility, where binding fibres are added to create the base material. The final step, hydroentangling, further

strengthens the material, making it suitable for many uses.

These efforts will be on display at the Flooring Show 2024, where CAMPEN Machinery will exhibit on stand C67. Visitors can see the samples made by CAMPEN’s carpet and airlaid divisions and learn more about these innovative recycled materials.
