Each issue, we ask a flooring industry professional 10 Questions. This month, we chatted to Dave Francis, Sales Director, Kellars.


What was your first job? I was a civil servant working

as a clerical officer for the Department of Health and Social Security. As I was playing semi-professional football at the time, I wanted a job that was flexible and would enable me to continue playing. Plus, my boss was a former England hockey player so she actively encouraged me to play football.

How did you get into the industry?

My dad was a sales director and managing director in the industry so I was introduced to flooring at an early age and followed in his footsteps.

What has been your proudest moment?

Having worked in the industry for over 30 years, I’ve got to know a lot of people and nothing makes me prouder than seeing them progress in their career. There are lots who have worked for me who now own their own company or are in a senior position and it’s nice to know that I may have played a small part in this.

If you could hire any one person to be part of your

team, who would it be and why? Robert the Bruce for his tenacity and because it will go down well with my sales team north of the border!


What’s the best advice you could give to

someone new coming into

the industry? Work hard and listen to those with experience. If you do this it will get you a long way in this industry of ours. It’s something which has served me well over the years and I try to instil this in everyone I come across whether at Kellars or anywhere else.


If you could be any character from film or

TV who would you be? Arthur Daley because I loved Minder


and I like the idea of doing my VAT in The Winchester pub. For those not old enough to remember Minder, he was referring to Vodka And Tonic. George Cole was a great actor.


What do you think are the positive and negative

aspects of the flooring trade? The positive is that we are such a close- knit sector. Everyone knows each other and it’s not uncommon for generations of a family to work in the industry. There’s a real sense of community and this garners trust and respect.

If I could change anything, it would be to encourage companies in the sector to take on more sales staff from outside the industry because there’s still a tendency to recruit from within. There are some really good people out there who would bring further added value to the flooring trade and many are actively looking for jobs due to the current situation so we need to be tapping into their skills and expertise.


What do you think the future holds for

flooring design? I think hard flooring is only going to get bigger, particularly LVT and SPC, with more ranges and advancements

in manufacturing contributing to this. Artificial grass is also going become even more important in the industry, particularly the heavier weight 40mm product which looks almost indistinguishable from the real thing. We’re increasingly seeing more people turning to artificial grass for their gardens as it is easier to maintain and I can only see the quality of the product increasing further in the future.


If you weren’t in flooring, what career

would you choose? You would expect me to say footballer, given the answer to my first question, but I always saw myself going into the police. I blame my dad for that not happening!

time saving tip? Trust in your staff and don’t be afraid to delegate – that saves a lot of time and it’s good for their development too.
