EDITOR’S VOICE
At the time of writing, we are nearing the end of our sixth week under lockdown. As emergency health measures such as social distancing came into place, the majority of construction projects have been put on hold. PMI data indicates that March saw the steepest downturn of construction output since the recession of 2009 – having a huge knock-on effect for the flooring industry. Trade organisations such as the Federation of Master Builders therefore called for government grants to support small construction firms and mitigate the risk of a huge financial crisis ocurring on a scale of that a decade ago.
The Chancellor has responded with the launch the Bounce Back Loan Scheme, which opened for applications on 4 May. This government-backed scheme enables small businesses to borrow between £2,000 and £50,000 with the cash accessible within a matter of days. Loans are interest free for 12 months with no repayments due for that period. This should go a long way towards ensuring that small companies struggling with cash flow problems will be able to keep operating.

Across Europe many manufacturers are already starting to get back to production and, in fact, in the UK some never stopped. The flooring industry has rallied in helping to rapidly transform spaces for emergency healthcare and aid. F. Ball has been involved in a charity project for the NHS while Amtico is helping to produce essential PPE for key workers. You can find out more in our What’s New section.
While it is still uncertain when we will be able to return to any sense of normality, as an industry we remain positive.
Stay safe.
