RESILIENT FLOORING
academy to benefit from all those points I discussed earlier. From start to finish, the floor renewal was completed in just five days during the school holidays which removed any impact on teachers, support staff and students. In comparison, if the Academy had opted to rip out the old floor and install a new floor, completion would have typically taken around two to three weeks – resulting in certain classrooms and the main reception area being unusable for an extended period.
Crunching the numbers, West Lakes Academy has achieved significant cost and efficiency savings. Based on the 1,100m² surface that our team renewed:
CO2 SAVINGS
By using Bona’s resilient floor renewal system, up to 90% savings are achievable on the carbon footprint compared to replacing with new, meaning savings in transport, electricity use, consumables and materials. The project at West Lakes Academy achieved CO2 savings of 11,286.
ENERGY SAVINGS
The energy savings reached for the entire project were 55,000 kWh.
TIME SAVINGS
In just five days during the holidays, West Lakes Academy had an as-new floor which meant the school day had zero disruption. This time may have tripled with a brand-new installation. Also, other contractors were able to work around us which was an important benefit for the Academy.
COST SAVINGS
Costs for a brand-new installation can soon soar as it’s not just the cost of purchasing a new floor, it’s also the cost of ripping out the existing floor, repairing or replacing subfloors, and disposing of the old floor. Yet it’s calculated that West Lakes Academy saved 50 – 60% by choosing resilient renewal.
THE CONTRACTOR’S CHOICE
The project utilised a range of Bona products, and was an easy five-step process – attractive for both contractors and clients. I’ve worked with Bona for years and its high-quality products out- perform anything I’ve ever used.
STEP ONE: DEEP CLEAN
With high footfall across the Academy, stubborn stains and a residue build up had accumulated over time, resulting in a tired and dull surface. To address this, the floor was cleaned to release loose and bonded dirt.
This was followed by the application of Bona’s specialist cleaning solution to improve levelling and smoothness for the recoating before using Bona’s commercial grade specialist machinery to tackle further stains and scratches.
STEP TWO: RENOVATE AND REPAIR
To ensure a smooth surface and prepare for the colour coating, a commercial grade Flexisand with diamond abrasives was used.

With various imperfections visible, including holes and missing welds and joints, time was spent filling to again ensure a smooth finish.
Using the Bona PowerScrubber to rinse and neutralise, ensured the floor was fully cleaned and prepared before coating. While the use of microfibre mops facilitated the final rinse.
STEP THREE: RECOAT
By using the Bona recoating system, two coats were applied to change the colour of the floor at West Lakes Academy. There is a wide choice of colours available and this has recently been expanded with the launch of the Bona Resilient Solution Colour Collection, which reflects tones and colours inspired by nature to enhance wellbeing and productivity.
STEP FOUR: DESIGN EFFECTS
Whilst the second colour recoat was applied, decorative chips were added to enhance the effect of the floor. The academy had a choice of five standard colour chips, or the option to create its own custom design. There is always the choice of incorporating a logo or branding if required which appeals to some clients too.
STEP FIVE: SEAL AND PROTECT
For long-term surface protection, the final transparent overcoating gave a stunning finish to the Academy’s easy-to-clean surface. In spaces with high footfall, this provides the highest level of protection and durability.
Finally, to ensure the floor remains looking clean, fresh and hygienic for many years to come, a maintenance guide ensures the Academy is aware of how to keep it in the best condition and which products to use.
GET THE RIGHT LOOK
Sometimes, it’s difficult for clients to imagine what a renewed surface will look like in situ. Bona’s visualiser is a great tool to showcase how the different colour options and decorative chips change the look of a space. It’s quick and easy to use – just upload a photo of the area into the visualiser and select the finish.

West Lakes Academy now has a modern, fresh look to its flooring in reception and in some classrooms. Due to the project’s success, resilient floor renewal will be front of mind when floorcoverings in other zones of the Academy are due for attention because it comes out tops in terms of environmental, cost and time savings. Equally, the Academy is part of a larger trust and other schools within the group are now exploring the possibilities of renewal in their spaces.
From a contractor’s viewpoint, the benefits highlighted mean that renewing rather than replacing is a highly attractive option, while the high quality of the Bona solutions facilitate the best results for clients. Renewal is also perfectly suited to many sectors including schools, hospitals, care homes, retail, commercial and more – all of which use resilient flooring extensively. Choosing renewal delivers rewards across the board and it’s an area that is going to experience growing interest from clients.
