EDITOR’S VOICE

Hello and welcome to the June issue of Tomorrow’s Contract Floors.

It goes without saying that the construction industry has a huge impact on the environment, ranging from energy usage to emissions. But with growing concerns over the planet and global warming, there is increasing pressure on the sector to improve. With this in mind, in our Sustainability focus this month we hear from leading surface preparation, adhesives and finishing product manufacturers on the steps they are taking to help flooring contractors to reach their green goals and achieve sustainability evaluation criteria for jobs involving public sector procurement processes.

It’s estimated that 32% of landfill waste comes from the construction and demolition of buildings. In his article on page 24, Rohit Sharma explains how the renewal rather than replacement of resilient flooring can considerably reduce the carbon footprint and support the journey towards a resource efficient and circular future.

Global flooring manufacturer Interface is a long-time champion of sustainability in the flooring sector, aiming to create spaces that promote wellbeing and support creativity while positively impacting the planet. In our Public Sector section, we take a look at how these principles aligned with those of the University of Surrey where Interface’s carbon neutral solutions have been used to create an immersive wellbeing space for students.

As well as all of this, we have features on Floor Finishes and Seals, Flooring in the Home and advice on specifying expansion joint covers that meet all functional requirements, while blending in with their surroundings.
