distraction and disturbance for students who want to relax and tune out from the hustle and bustle of the campus.

Interface’s Human Connections collection was also used in the space to create interconnecting pathways that resemble moss, stones and paths. These elements of greenery are often found in the urban spaces that bring us together, such as piazzas. To implement zones and encourage wayfinding, Touch & Tones carpet tiles were also introduced, using colour and texture to create engaging environments.

PRIORITISING SUSTAINABILITY The University of Surrey is committed to embedding sustainability across all of its operations, teaching and research, so aims to work with partners with a similar ethos. Through its third party-verified Carbon Neutral Floors programme, Interface flooring is carbon neutral across its entire lifecycle, something that has supported the university in working towards its own carbon reduction goals. Interface’s full carpet tile portfolio also now comes with the company’s carbon negative CQuest Bio backing as standard, which helps to lower the carbon footprint of the carpet tile by a third. In addition, all of the manufacturer’s LVT products are made with 39% recycled content. And, as the flooring is modular, single tiles can be replaced as needed, avoiding unnecessary waste.

A PRACTICAL AND

DURABLE SOLUTION To meet the practicalities of high footfall in the student breakout area, Barricade 2 barrier matting was specified. It protects floors from dirt, reducing maintenance costs and increasing the lifetime of the flooring. It also improves air quality by trapping dust particles, contributing to the overall health and wellbeing of students and staff. Look Both Ways LVT tiles also offer the durability required for high-traffic areas, while still performing when it comes to design. The combination of the 0.55mm wear layer, embossing and Ceramor coating delivers superior surface performance and minimises scratching.

Chris Bavin, Interface account manager, said: “Together with Morgan Lovell, we’ve created a beautiful, inspiring and relaxing space which incorporates a variety of textures and colours to boost student wellbeing while supporting the university’s sustainability goals.

“To complete the 450m² design, the teams had just four weeks during the summer holidays before the new term started and with exams going on, the installation had to be completed outside of standard hours. However, the design of our products meant the tiles were easy to fit, so the flooring was installed in just two weeks and we were able to deliver the project on time. Students can now enjoy an immersive space where they can relax and take time out from their studies and we couldn’t be happier with the final result.”

Neil concluded: “As a university, we have a proud history steeped in innovation and we want to support and inspire our students in every way we can. This means working with partners who are constantly pushing the boundaries of innovation, so Interface’s smart and sustainable flooring was the perfect choice.”
