PROACTIVE INITIATIVES Reducing CO2 emissions is just one part of the ARDEX Group UK’s ‘eight-pillar’ commitment to sustainability which also includes:

• External scrutiny • Social sustainability • Energy efficiency • Zero waste • Single use plastic reduction • Greater use of recycled materials • Closed loop circular economy.

Prior to achieving ISO 14064:1, BAL and ARDEX UK have been pro-active putting in a number of key initiatives to demonstrate a commitment to sustainability and in return reducing their carbon footprint including: converting diesel forklifts to electric, partnering with a 100% renewable electricity provider and replacement of energy inefficient lighting with more efficient LED systems which will save more than 68,000 kW per annum.

Both companies also promote the use of electric or biofuel company vehicles and have installed eight EV charging points across its manufacturing sites in Stoke-on-Trent and Haverhill.

Reducing the use of ‘virgin’ plastics by using PCR – post consumer recycled plastic is also a key element of their sustainability plans.

Last year more than 280 tonnes of virgin plastic was substituted for PCR plastic, equating to more than 60% of all plastic materials used across both businesses.

More sustainable raw materials sourcing has also seen the company switch to sourcing 100% of its cement from the UK and EU, ending any reliance on Chinese imports.

Sustainability is a key factor in new product development with a focus on:

• Lower life cycle costs through high-performance products with life-time guarantees.

• Innovations to ensure less waste on site with extended product working times but rapid-hardening for fast– track completion.

• Innovations allowing less products required for projects as well as high-yield products.

• Innovations providing increased performance with recyclable content.

In addition to its in-house sustainability programme, the UK group also supports external environmental groups with BAL’s charitable partnership with Cool Earth – a charity which works alongside rainforest communities to halt deforestation and its impacts on climate change.

Cool Earth supports local and indigenous knowledge to develop innovative ways to address threats to the forest while making communities stronger and more resilient.

Building Adhesives, through its BAL brand, are committed to saving over 80 acres of endangered rainforest in the Peruvian Amazon every year.
