REACHING NEW STANDARDS

ARDEX UK and Building Adhesives Ltd are taking significant steps and gaining international accreditation on their journey to becoming carbon neutral by 2030.

Working together as part of the global ARDEX Group, Building Adhesives Ltd (BAL) and ARDEX UK understand the need to reduce their impact on the environment sustainable sourcing of materials and energy, working to meet international standards and through a significant programme of Co2 reduction.

Against the backdrop of COP26, we all know the consequences on the planet of failing to reduce our carbon emissions.

Every company in each sector of industry has a moral responsibility to reduce carbon emissions with aspirations of being carbon neutral. However, before you can act, you must be able to understand those emissions.

Both Building Adhesives Ltd and ARDEX UK recently worked with Achilles (Recognised Certified Body) to accurately reduce and measure their Carbon Footprints endorsed by verifiable commitment to reduce emissions and to continually improve environmental performance.

By working with Achilles, both companies have become the first companies in the global ARDEX Group and the first companies in the tiling and adhesives sectors in the UK to achieve ISO 14064-1 (known as CEMARS) for the quantifying and reporting of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions (scope 1 & 2) and Carbon Reduction.

Outlining why the accreditation was so important for its UK operations, David Shephard, ARDEX Group UK Operations Director and Sustainability Lead, said: “The key to our reduction commitment must be honesty and transparency, which is why it is important to achieve independent and impartial verification through established and recognised accreditation. The standard and its tools have become an integral aspect in us delivering upon our promises to reduce emissions and meeting our targets.

“By working with Achilles,

both companies have become the first in the UK tiling and adhesives sectors to achieve ISO 14064-1 (known as

CEMARS) for the quantifying and reporting of Greenhouse

Gas (GHG) emissions (scope 1 & 2) and Carbon Reduction.”

22 | SUSTAINABILITY

“The achievement of Part 1 of the standard will provide a platform to more challenging research and development innovation as the companies prepare to take on the challenge of products containing less carbon output when we venture into ISO 14064-02, a future aspiration. In return all our efforts will assist us in successful delivery of our ambitious Carbon Neutral plans by 2030 (scope 1 and 2).”

In achieving the standard, BAL and ARDEX UK worked with Achilles to verify the accuracy of its outputs measured through rigorous audit and verification of data. As a result of the achievement, it can openly and confidently confirm positive and incremental carbon reduction.

Achilles’ Carbon Reduce (powered by Toitu) scheme highlights the necessary data from all activities which is critiqued under the ISO 14064:1 scheme. Following successful completion and assessment, executive reports are produced for independent verification, to bolster the companies claims.

Solutions to manage and reduce greenhouse gas emissions at source were then provided to both companies, with external impartial auditors authorised to verify GHG inventories in accordance with the standard’s requirements.

Measuring carbon output under ISO 14064-1 includes company vehicles, business travel, fuel and electricity, water and waste, to name a few. In return, this assists Building Adhesives Ltd and ARDEX UK to accurately identify areas of the business where they can reduce their emissions and consequent impacts on the environment.

Achilles assists companies identifying carbon credit or offsetting projects that meet the internally accepted definition of a financial instrument that represents a unit of greenhouse gases.

To avoid the financial and reputation damage of investing in a poor-quality offset, as part of their Carbon Reduction certificate, Achilles apply a thorough set of principles to
