TERRAZZO TREND In the commercial sector, MAC has seen a trend emerging of the use of mastic asphalt flooring incorporating terrazzo. Terrazzo flooring has made a resurgence due to its durability, longevity and low maintenance properties.
Modern interpretations of terrazzo have been created by combining decorative stone chippings with mastic asphalt, which is then polished to create infinite possibilities in any design situation. Other finishes can also be created - matt or smooth - as opposed to the highly polished effect normally associated with terrazzo.
Mastic asphalt terrazzo offers the durability and distinctive features of terrazzo and consists of a traditional mastic asphalt base with a modern finish. Slip and skid resistance can be incorporated into the wearing course of the mastic asphalt. Mastic asphalt terrazzo flooring looks good year- after-year and adds style to any commercial flooring project.

IN ACTION Mastic asphalt flooring has been installed at the Road Safety Experience Centre which is run by Kent Fire and Rescue Service and was the first purpose built, interactive centre of its kind in the UK. It uses powerful stories, interactive experiences and information from experienced road safety experts. The aim is to encourage young people to look at the potential consequences of a road accident from all perspectives - themselves, their passengers, other drivers and their families.
The Road Safety Experience Centre provides educational visits for up to 90 young people a day. It is free to all schools, colleges and groups in Kent and Medway and is primarily aimed at helping to keep 14- to 25-year-olds safe on the roads.

on the lecture theatre floor at the Road Safety Experience Centre, due to its exceptional durability and ability to be rapidly installed.
Knight Asphalt used a British Standard Grade 4 flooring mastic manufactured by MAC member IKO plc. IKO delivered 16 tonnes of molten mastic asphalt in a single hot charge delivery enabling Knight Asphalte to complete the 50mm thick asphalt flooring works in a single day. IKO’s mastic asphalt flooring system is ideal for use in a wide range of locations including factory floors, breweries, domestic applications, sports halls, hospitals, offices, schools, shop floors and showrooms.
The Mastic Asphalt Council (MAC) is the trade association for the mastic asphalt industry in the UK. Representing more than 80 companies, MAC members include mastic asphalt manufacturers, specialist application contractors and associated suppliers of equipment and services. MAC can recommend experienced contractors to carry out mastic asphalt projects.
