DESIGNED TO STAN The Mastic Asphalt Council (MAC) look at what makes th
Mastic asphalt terrazzo
For an industrial or commercial floor to operate effectively it must be hardwearing, versatile and able to withstand everything from heavy foot traffic, to frequent steam cleaning, to forklift trucks and hefty machinery.
Mastic asphalt is a heavy-duty, seamless flooring solution capable of withstanding the demanding conditions experienced in environments such as manufacturing plants, factories and warehouses.
Suitable for both newbuild and refurbishment flooring projects where a smooth, seamless, durable surface is required, it can be laid over many different structural bases such as concrete, metal flooring and timber boarding.
In use for centuries, mastic asphalt has an illustrious history as one of the most established and well proven waterproofing membrane systems currently available, consisting of graded aggregate bound together with bitumen. Today’s mastic asphalt systems utilise advanced polymer technology to provide the ideal combination of long-term durability, increased fatigue resistance, improved temperature stability and ease of installation.
Floors in industrial or commercial environments are constantly under stress whether it is water, chemicals, temperature variations, cleaning agents and mechanical loads such as forklift trucks or pallet drivers. It is absolutely critical that floors not only meet health and safety guidelines, but also provide exceptional slip resistance, cleanability and durability.

In the past, ceramic tiles might have presented an ideal solution but they have their own set of problems and can be dislodged, chipped or the grout might break down in the steam cleaning process, leading to hygiene issues, particularly in food production facilities. Mastic asphalt is ideal for floors in the food production or manufacturing environments, providing a hygienic, slip resistant and easy clean solution which can handle variations in temperature, mechanical loads and wear.
Mastic asphalt can be rapidly installed using a hot charge process, and it cools very rapidly. This ensures minimal downtime during installation or maintenance, allowing machinery or other equipment to be re-installed within just two to three hours depending on ambient temperature and allowing normal routines or operations to be resumed.
Fire safety is another vital consideration for flooring systems. The high mineral content of mastic asphalt renders it virtually incombustible. It offers an optimum fire rating and non- flammable properties (BroofT4 according to BS EN 13501-1).
Once installed, mastic asphalt offers a quality, dust-free, seamless and user-friendly surface, making it ideal for industrial applications, where there are likely to be high levels of traffic from forklift trucks and similar vehicles. Special grades of mastic asphalt can also be used for flooring applications where spark resistant properties are vital such as in car manufacturing, or when increased resistance to acid solutions is required.
