A 100mm wide feature strip made from Marmoleum Real in Kyoto, which is a bright orange shade, also runs along the floor in the Check-In and Security area, by the Departure gates and the Arrivals baggage area. “We wanted to incorporate CHC’s orange brand colour into the floor design in a way that wasn’t overwhelming, but still stood out,” continued Ian. “The orange strip against the darker colours adds a different dimension to the scheme and it also works twofold, as it can act as a ‘stop’ point for passengers, whether they’re waiting to get their bags weighed or getting ready to board.”

Continuing with the notion of incorporating CHC’s brand colours into the design, Tessera Alignment carpet tiles in Sunspot was chosen for areas that required a softer finish and comfort underfoot. The multi-height loops give this distinctive floorcovering a bold directional theme which is tempered by the introduction of intersecting random blocks of rich cut pile, resulting in a highly effective broadloom appearance and unique linear style. This was perfect for use in areas manned by staff, such as behind the Check-In desks, as well in the new first floor lounge which overlooks the airfield.

Ian continued: “We had used the Marmoleum Real strip and the Tessera Alignment carpet tiles in the first phase of the project, and they were elements that the client really liked and wanted us to include in the terminal. The exceptional

performance of Tessera carpet tiles makes them perfect for these types of areas, yet the contemporary styling of Alignment adds subtle interest to the space. I think it works really well alongside the unique Marmoleum Modular design.”

In addition, Surestep Steel in Metallic Charcoal was used in the toilets, staff room, lockers and cleaners’ stores and Coral Duo entrance matting in Luna Pearl at the front of the terminal to keep the outside from getting in. Eternal general- purpose vinyl in Anthracite Concrete was also installed in the Arrivals baggage area.

Ian concluded: “We are really pleased with the success of the redevelopment of the helicopter terminal and it has definitely helped CHC to achieve their goal of creating a world-class facility. If passengers ever got stuck here, CHC know that their terminal facilities are good enough to cater for them, and the upgrade will certainly help them to win new clientele too. The terminal is a lot more streamlined now and with the help of the team at Forbo, we have been able to create an integrated flooring scheme that is functional yet beautiful in line with this vision.”

The CHC Helicopter Terminal’ was a commended project in the Fly Forbo 2019/20 competition. Find out about this year’s Fly Forbo 2021/22 here.
