effectively engineered barrier product, it is estimated that a saving of £10 can be made on soil removal inside a building.

As employee health and wellbeing continues to move up the corporate agenda, the positive impact an effective EFS can have on indoor air quality and even acoustics is now increasingly understood by businesses. It is also now recognised by LEED and the International Well Building Institute as a tangible contributor in WELL building management.

“You never get a second chance to make a good first impression.”

Common Materials include:

• Cut-Pile Nylon: traps moisture and debris in between the open fibres and allows for easy cleaning to remove captured debris.

• Loop-Pile Nylon: absorbs moisture while maintaining a carpet-like appearance. This tighter, denser material is not as effective at capturing dirt and debris, is harder to clean and should primarily be used for moisture management.

• Scrapers: have strong monofilament fibres that use an effective brushing action to capture debris. Their aggressive scraping action removes dirt and debris from shoes as foot traffic travels across the textile. The pockets of space between the fibres traps the debris, allowing for ease of cleaning and removal.

• Rubber and Vinyl: very low-maintenance, easy-to-clean, durable materials. Provide first line scraping defence against any outside elements.

• Non-Woven Polypropylene: a compressed textile typically positioned into rubber that repels water. Its tight, dense construction can be less effective at capturing dirt and debris and can be more difficult to clean.

SO WHY IS AN EFFECTIVE EFS

SO IMPORTANT? First and foremost, UK building regulations and inclusive design guidance stipulates that entrance flooring must meet particular standards. This is unsurprising when you consider that, according to the HSE, slips and trips are the most common cause of major injuries at work, with 95% of slips resulting in broken bones. Furthermore, most slips occur in wet or contaminated conditions. A curled mat or ill-suited entrance product can, and has, led businesses to disastrous legal and financial consequences, so this is something that cannot be ‘swept under the carpet’.

From an economic perspective, beyond potential legal actions, the cost savings that can be made on cleaning and maintenance of internal floorcoverings can be significant. For every £1 spent on keeping soil out of a building with an

Whoever made this statement, (and not even Google can agree), when considered in the context of buildings, the sentiment is clear – an entrance space can say an enormous amount about what lies within. Whether that is around maintaining a company’s brand integrity or expressing its attitude to the welfare of its employees and visitors, an impressive, well-maintained entrance can leave a lasting impression.
