SOUND SOLUTIONS FOR LEVELLING UP Mapei discusses how to select the optimum levelling compound for any project.
A good screed construction is the foundation of a good installation. So many demands are put upon this vital floor element; there are technical requirements in terms of the floor finish, its environment, its application and, crucially, time constraints. In response, Mapei offers a wide range of levelling compounds that perform to the highest technical standards, while providing multiple benefits to the flooring contractor. Two best-selling ranges include water-mixed Mapei Ultraplan and latex-mixed Mapei Latexplan.
The Mapei Ultraplan range includes three water- mixed formulations, for ultra-fast installations, maximum levelling and renovation projects:
Ultra-fast hardening Mapei Ultraplan Eco 3210* offers the most rapid timescales, with a setting time of 45-60 minutes and three hours for light foot traffic. The highly fluid and easily workable smoothing compound that can be hand or pump applied and is formulated for new and existing subfloors with differences of 3-10mm. *NB. The product number, after the name, indicates the from and to (2) thickness, ie., 3mm to 10mm is denoted by 3210, enabling quick selection of the correct product for the thickness required.
The screed is suitable for all types of floorcovering and for most common substrates. It is also suitable for underfloor heating and castor wheels. Most materials can be installed after 12 hours and wood can be laid after 24 hours.
For subfloors that require maximum levelling, Mapei Ultraplan Maxi 3230* is an ultra-fast drying formulation that can be applied from 3-30mm on new and existing solid substrates. It has a setting time of 50-70 minutes, three hours for light foot traffic and floorcoverings can be installed after 1-3 days. Ultraplan Maxi 3230 is highly resistant to loads and traffic, and has a very low VOC content. *NB. 3mm to 30mm is donated by 3230.
For renovations and refurbishments, Ultraplan Renovation Screed 3240* provides a fibre-reinforced solution for new

and existing substrates with differences of 3-40mm. The self-levelling compound can be hand or pump applied; it sets in 30-90 minutes, is light foot traffic ready after 4-6 hours and installation ready after 1-3 days. It is suitable for a variety of substrates and is sufficiently flexible for use over timber, floorboards, chipboard panels and plywood. It is also suitable for underfloor heating systems and castor wheels. *NB. 3mm to 40mm is denoted by 3240.
Mapei’s Latexplan range provides three latex- mixed levelling and smoothing compounds, to cater for project types:
Latexplan No Ammonia is a fast-setting two-component formulation for differences in thickness of 3 to 10mm. It sets in 30 minutes, is set to light foot traffic after 60 minutes and is installation ready after four hours. The screed can be applied over old adhesive residues, including bitumen, over plywood and ceramic tiles without the need for priming, and it is suitable for heated screeds and castors. The levelling compound is protein and ammonia-free and is moisture tolerant.
Two-component Latexplan Trade is suitable for new and existing floors with differences between 3-10mm, and it provides high compressive strength of 26N/mm2
. The
formulation sets in 45-60 minutes, is light foot traffic ready after 15 minutes to two hours, and floors can be installed after 12 hours. Latexplan Trade is suitable for all types of floorcoverings and is moisture tolerant.
The third formulation – rapid curing two-component Latexplan Trade Fast – also caters for differences of 3-10mm and provides very high compressive strength of 32N/mm2
. It
is suitable for use over most adhesive residues, including bitumen, and can receive all types of floorcoverings, castor wheels and heated screeds. The formulation sets in 30 minutes, is light foot traffic ready after 60 minutes and can be installed upon after just 2.5 – 3 hours.
