‘connected’ washroom dispensers. This allows them to top up the units at any time, avoiding run-outs.

Venue managers need to consider a wide range of needs when equipping their washrooms. The Tork Better Hygiene for All initiative aims to help businesses strengthen their brands and increase performance by meeting the washroom needs of as many people as possible. Essity is inviting business leaders, facility managers, cleaners, designers and washroom users to join the company’s movement to improve public washrooms and provide better hygiene for all.

Paying a premium price for use of a VIP washroom might be a step too far for many cash-strapped festival-goers.

However, one US event this spring made a bold move by offering upgraded women’s washrooms free of charge.

The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in California provided a sponsored Refresh Room complete with phone- charging stations, bag hooks, a perfume bar, mood lighting and music. Perhaps this is the way forward: hygiene companies could sponsor washroom provision at festivals and create pleasant spaces that serve to highlight their own products.

In this way, everybody wins: the venue which will be able to offer enhanced facilities; the provider who will gain valuable publicity; and the end-user who will have access to much better washrooms.
