Speaking honestly about the importance of recycling


Paul Jakeway, Head of Marketing EMEA at Rubbermaid Commercial Products (RCP), discusses recycling and winning the Tomorrow’s Cleaning Awards 2021.


Thank you. To the businesses across Europe that took part in our Love Recycling research projects and to everyone that voted for us to win this award, thank you. You have shown that businesses care about their impact on the world, that commercial recycling is a foundation for the future of business.


One of the most interesting statistics to come out of our 2020 research was that respondents rank the importance of commercial recycling higher than returning consistent returns to shareholders. This demonstrates an honest, outward looking approach. An understanding that what happens in a facility doesn’t stay in a facility: it has an impact elsewhere.


The businesses we spoke to were not just honest about the importance of recycling, but also the more practical side of it. Over 70% of them told us that sometimes their efforts to recycle were unsuccessful. The cause for this lack of success can come in various forms: poorly implemented processes, the use of substandard products, or a lack of in- house knowledge on the best way to proceed.


On this latter point, businesses were again honest about the challenges they face. Businesses lack recycling training and information. Most companies ensure they meet legal requirements, but do not have the knowhow to go further. This lack of information also manifests in their other two challenges, establishing policies and purchasing reliable, effective products.


When asked, an overwhelming number of businesses expect local and national authorities to do more to increase training, incentives and penalties related to commercial recycling. Businesses want help but they

lack choice in where that help comes from, and face competition for attention.


On the opposite page is the Love Recycling manifesto, a document created as a result of our research findings. It looks at the situation today, where businesses can be in the future and how we intend to support them getting there.


Businesses can be sustainability leaders.


To do that they need better processes for handling waste, more in-house knowledge to drive success and better products that make recycling more efficient and more cost effective. To do all that, they need more information.


In the Love Recycling manifesto, we pledge to create free resources that support the implementation of effective commercial recycling through knowledge, training and the best products. We’ll also identify the best that recycling offers, recognising the people that go above and beyond and the innovation that takes us closer to a sustainable world.
