10 Questions with... Mark Dennis

Each month we ask a cleaning industry professional the

Tomorrow’s Cleaning 10 Questions. This month, we chatted to Mark Dennis, Managing Director at MAG Group.

1 2 3

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB? In addition to my paper round aged 13, I started a potato

round in my local village, two nights a week pushing a wheelbarrow door to door.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE CLEANING INDUSTRY? In 1986 I started working as a Laundry Engineer at JLA,

which was a truly great experience and a good grounding for my journey ahead.

WHICH THREE WORDS DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONALITY?

Positive, optimistic and creative. 4

IF YOU COULD VISIT ONE PLACE IN THE WORLD, WHERE WOULD YOU GO AND WHY?

India: it appeals to me as there you often find a myriad of cultures from all around the world, coming together in one place. A trip to the Seychelles too.

costs. Not only is this important from a commercial aspect, it’s a key consideration for protecting the environment too, which is a priority for us.

IF AN INTERN WERE TO START TOMORROW, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE THEM?

Show value, create opportunities to make the experience worthwhile and strive to exceed customer expectations. Grab opportunities with both hands, grow in confidence, enhance skills and expand knowledge of the working world – it’s so important for a future career.

IF YOU WON THE LOTTERY TOMORROW, HOW WOULD YOU SPEND YOUR FORTUNE?

Well, not all Yorkshiremen squeak when they walk: I would look after my nearest and dearest, and maybe treat the team to a weekend on a private yacht with half price drinks.

IF YOU COULD HOST A DINNER PARTY AND INVITE ANY PEOPLE, DEAD OR ALIVE, WHO WOULD THEY

BE AND WHY? Frankie Boyle and Keith Lemon have always made me laugh, that would be my kind of party.

WHAT, DO YOU THINK, IS THE FUTURE OF THE CLEANING INDUSTRY?

I think the industry will see more machinery and product advances. Customers today expect a full-service approach, and a provider that can manage the entire process. We’ve seen more requests for the planning and design of laundry spaces, and uptake of our ongoing maintenance support. Having operators that can respond quickly, 24/7, is going to continue to be a requirement.

Mike Osiadacz, Sales Director at Matrix Cleaning Systems, asks: 10 5

HOW WOULD YOU IMPROVE THE CLEANING INDUSTRY?

I truly believe we have already started to improve the industry. Over the past five years our energy efficient laundry equipment has saved some of our clients in energy

IF YOU HAD TO LIVE A WEEK WITHOUT INTERNET, MOBILE PHONE OR SOCIAL MEDIA,

HOW WILL YOU KEEP YOURSELF BUSY? A week without the internet would be very challenging, however no social media is my day to day reality. Having headspace to think is very important to balance work and home life, which increases productivity and focus in business.
