Extreme cleaning for an extreme crisis

Specialist cleaning contractors are at the frontline battling COVID-19 – SafeGroup MD, Steve Broughton, shares the lessons learned so far.

A teenage pupil told a reporter it felt like being in a movie. How right he was: the COVID-19 crisis feels surreal, can it really be happening? Then the realisation hits that it absolutely can.

Every business is having that sensation right now. Big ones, small ones; we’re all making it up as we go along, to some degree or other. The COVID-19 virus is challenging business continuity planning to destruction.

Like a scene in a Hollywood blockbuster when amazed realisation is seen spreading across the faces of the actors, my movie moment came in the middle of the first week of March when the phones and online enquiry forms went frantic. We knew something very big was happening and we had to respond fast.

Biggest challenge

COVID-19 is the biggest challenge to the industrial cleaning and FM industry I’ve ever experienced. I’ve worked in the industry for 25 years, 15 as a business owner, and this is the Krakatoa of all crises.

What is making it worse is the lack of clear facts. COVID-19 is a coronavirus, like the common cold virus. But the scientists didn’t know, or weren’t saying, what its

properties were. Could people catch it twice? Does it linger in environments for a long time? People have been left guessing, while facts were lost in a blizzard of ‘expert’ noise.

Continuity crisis

Callers into our office were operating in this environment, most of them clearly launching their business continuity plan. They wanted to know if they could protect spaces and people against the virus. Could we provide such a service? And how much would it cost?

Most said thank you and went away with their figures. Where we got calls from more senior people, the response was more dynamic. We told them what we could do, we gave them a cost, and a lot more of them said just get here as quickly as you can.

Since then, our specialist environmental decontamination teams have been dispatched to all kinds of organisations across the UK. We have cleaned NHS facilities, financial institutions, helicopters, and retail spaces.

Continuous decontamination

The very first call we had was from one of London’s airports. The senior manager had used our services before
