Recognising the industry’s newcomers

Michelle Marshall, European Cleaning Journal Editor and founder of the European Cleaning & Hygiene Awards, reveals how this year’s event will celebrate both industry stalwarts and new talent.

2020 marks our fifth year in business. To date, we’ve travelled across Europe to bring our awards scheme to a different city each year, and have handed out trophies to some of the leading companies in our sector. And this year, to mark our fifth birthday, we’ve had a facelift, with a new website and fresh logo.

However, despite the changes to our look and location over the years, the one thing that has remained the same throughout this journey is our number one goal – to recognise excellence and celebrate the successes of the cleaning and hygiene industry.

Excellence can come from anywhere and success doesn’t have to be determined by how long you’ve been in the business. Just last year alone in the UK, there were over 672,000 start-ups founded, and with research showing that 65% of UK employees want to start their own business, this trend shows no sign of slowing down anytime soon.

For an industry that thrives on innovation, the start-up model is ideal. Of course, we have seen some of the industry’s largest companies coming up with ground- breaking solutions in recent years, either to tackle climate change or to improve productivity, but there are some new kids on the block that are able to dedicate their resources to R&D and make a huge impact on the market.

A start-up doesn’t have the major overheads that an established business does. It has the time and resources to invest in developing new ideas, and can get them off the ground quickly. They also have the benefit of seeing the industry in a different light, bringing a fresh approach to their work. But quite often, due to their infancy, start-up businesses aren’t recognised industry-wide.

This is something that we want to change, which is why this year, for the first time ever, we have launched the ‘Start-up Business of the Year’ award.

Shining a spotlight on the newcomers, this award is for those in their first five years of operation. Our judges will be looking for inspirational stories from new companies. From new innovative technology to companies delivering meaningful impact beyond profit – this is a great opportunity to get your business out there and your brand known amongst the leaders in the market.

We cannot wait to read all the entries and see what influence you will have on the industry. Remember, entries close on 21 June, so if you’re thinking about submitting then get pen to paper and show us what you’ve got.
